Author: Joseph Hocking Printing Year: 1918
Format: Hardback Fiction Subject: WAR & MILITARY
Fiction Type: Novel Language: English
Sub-Subject: Amnesia Special Attributes: 1st Edition
2nd Subject: Battles Subject: WORLD WAR ONE

A very early or first edition of this First World War story by the collectable and very prolific Cornish writer Joseph Hocking, author of around 100 books, including several 'Great War' stories written during WWI. The story opens with the hero of the book arriving in a very disheveled state aboard a boat from India and landing at Plymouth. It's 1914 and the early days of WWI, the narrator of the story is then working as a recruitment officer for the Army, and his chance meeting with this stranger reveals a case of total amnesia and a paradox, in as much as although initially taken for an Indian, he is actually English, well educated, and probably a person of rank with some vague knowledge of the British Army. On hearing that Britain is at War, the stranger immediately enlists and is sent to fight in France. The story runs through the awful battles in France and ends with a climax where the answers to several mysteries are revealed. A tale of Love, Bravery and scurrilous deeds woven into the background of the battles of WWI.

A scarce title. On Sale is an undated circa 1918 possible first edition of * The Pomp of Yesterday *, by Joseph Hocking (1860-1937), published by Hodder & Stoughton, London, [First Published 1918] this one is undated with no other editions or impressions noted, a quotation in the book and the Foreword are both dated March 1918 so would have been published in the latter half of 1918, this one has written to the front free-endpaper: "Dad. March 1919", so would probably have been printed in the latter half of 1918, therefore quite possibly the first edition, also all the other titles shown opposite the title-page are earlier than this one and it's printed on cheap greyish wartime-quality recycled paper, size approximately 7-1/2 inches x 5 inches, with 320 pages.

The green cloth-covered hardcover with darker green title and border to the front and spine, is rubbed and bumped on the extremities with light wear on the spine-ends, has some flex creasing and indentations to the front cover, sound and not split along the spine, not faded, lightly soiled, otherwise reasonably clean (see photo's 1 & 3). Inside is complete, a small indentation towards the top of the front cover continues into the first few pages as a shallow dent, the endpapers have some tiny splits at the fold but still sound, hinges a bit stretched with boards well attached, binding a little stretched in a couple of places else sound with all pages well attached, has an impressed three word address and very brief gift inscription to the ffe as noted above, no other writing or graffiti,  pages not torn, a couple of corners had been turned but not widespread, some very pale age-toning to the last page and the page edges and occasionally a little to the outer margins else mostly not tanned, a little pale foxing to the endpapers and the page edges else mostly clear, a very tiny amount of pale usage soiling specks that look like foxing, otherwise mostly very clean and tidy.

Please Note: that ebay now take 10% of your postage money for doing nothing, this is on top of the commission they earn for selling the item, and the percentage of the whole that paypal take for processing the payment, this has inevitably put P&P prices up to leave enough to actually pack and post the item.
