Vintage 1920's Sterling Solid Silver Waterman's Fountain Pen Gold Nib 452 1/2 V
For sale is a beautiful Waterman’s Sterling silver circa 1920s fountain pen model Ideal 452 ½ V; it is a rare, vintage American made pen that would be an excellent addition to anyone's pen collection.
The body is crafted of black hard rubber with an intricate sterling silver filigree overlay engraved with “MADE IN THE U.S.A.” and “STERLING”.
The pen has a gold nib although no indication of the carat engraved with WATERMAN’S IDEAL REG U.S.
It is a ring-top pen with no clip, a pen whose cap has affixed to its closed end a swivelling ring through which the user can thread a chain, braid, or other “string” to hang the pen around the neck when it is not in use. The cap is engraved with WATERMANS and STERLING.
It has a lever filler “Ideal” ink mechanism which has not been tested but the lever pulls out and returns tightly into position.
There are some initials engraved on the pen that look like MPK.
Model Number 452 ½ V
The L. E. Waterman Company tried to bring some order to its model designations; Waterman devised a standardised numbering system for their pens around 1917 indicating the specifics of the pen; for this model the 452 1/2 V represents:
4: Sterling overlay, barrel and cap
5: Lever Filler (LF)
2: Indicates the nib size, it has a “No. 2” nib.
½: Slender model
V: Vest pocket (short) model
Length with cap: 92mm
Length no cap: 87mm
Cap length: 45mm
Weight: 13g (weighed on my rather inaccurate kitchen scales!)
The pen screws open, and the screw is in excellent condition. The pen has not been recently cleaned so would come out beautifully if someone took the time to clean it up. It has not been used in some time so may require a professional clean.
