LUMAG brake linings are made of an asbestos-free friction mixture, with a resin as its main binding agent. Raw materials and components used in the production are supplied by our tested and certified partners. All the raw materials, as a part of the initial inspection, undergo additional tests - each time we have to be sure that the material we use in production is of the proper, required quality.
LUMAG is the only producer who has never used asbestos in its mixtures. The formulas developed in our own laboratory do not contain any heavy metals which could be a threat to the natural environment or vehicle users.
In the technical assessment of LUMAG products the following factors are taken into account:
1. Functioning in high temperatures
Heat induced wear of linings is a result of the heat generated in the process of friction. In turn, resistance characteristics of friction materials are limited and damaged. The results and course of this kind of wear depend on the type of the material used in the production of linings. Products of heat-induced wear of linings include charred particles of resins and synthetic rubber - they are soft, hard or form a substance similar to a fluid.
The hardness of friction materials determines the pressure per unit area in the areas of actual contact of a pair of friction elements. The hardness of friction materials may reach from 20 to 500 MPa (ISO 2039:1987 standard).
3. Fading resistance
Fading (temperature fading, usage fading) is a slight fading, as the name suggests, of a vehicle's braking efficiency when the brakes get hot. It takes place when the braking distance of a vehicle (it braking efficiency) becomes longer by 20% or more in comparison to braking in normal conditions. The features and intensity of fading depend on multiple factors, such as the type of the material, the method of lining hardening and their heat treatment.
4. Quiet operation of brakes
Noise is a result of self-excited vibration generated in brake mechanisms during braking. Vibrations are related to the so-called dry friction and are accompanied by a squeaking noise. Noisy operation of the brake system may be caused by play in brake shoe pins and expander levers, whipping of brake drums and discs, slanting of working areas of brake discs, a distance between the lining and brake shoes (incompatibility of radiuses, improper riveting or a bad selection of rivets) or the wear of springs pulling brake shoes from the disc of a drum brake.
5. Friction factor
A friction factor is a ratio of the friction force and the reactive force of a plane (drum, brake disc). The friction factor of brake linings offered on the market of spare parts cannot differ from parts of the original equipment manufacturer by more than +/- 15%.
6. Braking efficiency
Braking efficiency is defined as the ratio of the braking force to the axle load, usually expressed in percent.
It is essential for the braking system in a vehicle to be reliable and effective, as it is this system that determines the safety of road users. The efficiency of the braking system directly depends on its structure and its technical condition, that is why the proper selection of brake pads and brake linings and their regular technical inspection are so crucial.
LUMAG has all the necessary certificates required from producers of friction materials. Those documents confirm the right selection of production technology and are testimony to the high quality of our products.
