VERY Rare 1941 Hetchins TRIO Frame and Fork Set

Serial number H412468.

This example was acquired by my grandfather (I've no idea when) from the original purchaser, who was his best friend. It has been stored in my father's garage since my early childhood (when my grandfather died), so it has been in this condition since at least the late 1960s, if not earlier.

The keeper of the Hetchins register informs me that this cycle was the last known sale of a Trio, and it was sent out to the original owner on the 25th June 1941; price was £17.2s.4d. To date, it is apparently only the fourth known example  to have survived.

As well as the patented "curly" rear fork, the Trio offered a 3-way rear dropout, for road, path, or track positions,  and an optional second front fork. The dimpled seat tube allowed a very short wheelbase in track formation with clearance for mudguards in road formation.

As can be seen from the photos, it's in need of quite a bit of restoration work. No transfers have survived.  It has also been pointed out to me that the top tube has a slight bend in it towards the head set- perhaps the result of an encounter with a parked car or the like!

So, the auction basically consists of what you see in the pictures- the frame, the front forks (only one set, I'm afraid- I HAVE BEEN INFORMED THAT THESE ARE THE ROAD FORKS) with matching serial number, a seat post, some sort of clamp at the top of the head set (which holds the forks in place), and a chain still attached to the frame (no idea of the make/date etc, but it has been a part of this cycle for as long as I can remember). The crankshaft is still installed in the bottom bracket shell (no idea if this is the original, although it's the same as in pictures of another Trio on line). There are also a couple of nuts and bolts here and there which may or may not be useless, but they're attached to the bike so they can stay.

The headstock badge is still there, although most of the paint is long gone. The badge is the "Tottenham London N19"  type commensurate with the bike's age.

This is probably a once-in-a-lifetime chance to procure a very rare and hard to come by model of  Hetchins curly frame and fork set.

Starting price for this auction reflects, in my view, the rarity of this item. If you have any questions about the bike (or if you require any measurements or additional pictures etc) then please contact me and I'll do my best to help.

I've no idea what it will cost to post, but can obtain a quote on request. I'd much rather that you arranged your own courier; that way nobody will have to pay e-bay's 10% fee on postage charges. I am happy to pack the bike for shipping for a small fee to cover the cost of the packaging. The bike will be very securely packaged for shipment; I'd hate to see it damaged. Unless you're paying cash, please wait to be invoiced before payment as I'll need to pack and weigh etc.

I am willing to post abroad (again, I'd rather you arranged your own courier, but please message me re. arrangements before bidding in any case), however only to countries where tracking is available. So unless you know any better, that probably rules out Russia, Africa and South America. I will only ship to confirmed e-bay addresses and will do so ONLY AFTER FUNDS HAVE CLEARED AND BEEN WITHDRAWN FROM MY PAYPAL ACCOUNT. Please don't message me for a postage quote 5 minutes before the auction ends, as I won't answer!!

Of course, cash on collection (from Bedford MK41 area) is available, in fact I'd prefer this method so that there is no drama about payment, and the buyer has seen the bike and is happy.
