For sale is this gorgeous, circa 1950's antique, classical Asian nude oil on canvas in its original solid wood, gold leaf frame. A commanding presence at well over 3 feet tall & over 2 feet wide, this folk art style piece is an extraordinary gem of vibrant color, while the model's relaxed, inviting, at-ease expression exudes a comforting glow, strong enough to fill any room or wallspace with a true, human radiance.
Her dark, black hair glosses with silky, rich tones, and white, strong highlights, while her eyes are, perhaps, the centerpiece of the painting, gazing like sharply-crafted, mesmerizing jewels. The symmetrical precision of her lovely nose exhibits a truly high skill, and adds to the beauty of her face, together with tumescent, vividly red lips. Overall, despite this artwork being a gorgeous nude, with careful rendering of the model's shapely breasts, it is the quality of painting in the face that elevates this artwork to something truly beautiful.
Beyond the lovely body & face of the model, the traditional / ethnic accoutrements seen in the foreground - various brass serving vessels (suggesting she is either a servant or wife in a traditional home or employ) & a low, basket-woven table - give this painting a genuinely compelling ethnic interest.
Her deep, burgundy red robe with light yellow stylized designs completes this authentic Asiatic look, which I take to be either Southeast Asian (possibly Indonesian or Thai) or South Pacific (possibly, Tahitian). Indeed, this is the first time in my life I am selling an artwork from my private collection, kept for circa 60+ years in one family, without knowing exactly what it is, and exactly who painted it; the unusual ethnic implements (stylized brassware; reminscent of some wares I see from Thailand & Indonesia) & undecipherable signature leave the painting outside my areas of expertise, which while broad, do not include this genre. At first glance, one is tempted to associate the woman with Gauguin & Tahiti, but this is a later artist probably not looking to Gauguin at all, instead, capturing his own cultural iconography in a beautiful & original way.
While boldly & largely signed lower-right in bright orange paint, the signature is indecipherable to me; one obstacle being that I am not sure if the letters are English, Chinese/Asian script, Cyrillic (Russian, etc.), or similar. There is a very faint stamp on the stretcher bar (verso; see last photograph, above), that shows better in U.V. light, and might yield more geographic information (i.e. locale). Whoever the artist was - folk artist or trained fine artist - the rendering abilities exhibited in the beautiful woman's face reveal true talent, and certainly, training. In general, I have learned the best bargains are found (for you, as the buyer) when the seller doesn't know what s/he has, which is why I never put myself in that position! However, in this case, with all the art I have on my plate to research outside this particular genre, I leave that task to a collector more knowledgeable in this ethnic area - presumably, Southeast Asia or the South Pacific.
I will say that my knowledge of art sales shows that similar paintings of this age, quality, beauty, and similar subject matter (Asian nudes from the 1930's-1960's), typically sell for around $1,500-$3,000 in this size-range (large) & medium (oil on canvas), so the the current price is a bargain (INCLUDING FREE SHIPPING - A CIRCA $150-$200+ VALUE!!).
THE OTHER WONDERFUL THING ABOUT THIS ANTIQUE PAINTING IS THAT - DESPITE ITS AGE - IT IS IN READY-TO-HANG CONDITION!! YOU CAN BUY THIS, AND PUT IT RIGHT UP ON YOUR WALL AFTER PURCHASE!!
