A very handsome, sweeping design, which in some ways reflects the Hooper ‘Empress’ design, with full spats to the rear wheels, etc, but on the other hand with its own individuality as well, making this car something special. Freestone & Webb bodies stand in a class of their own, being well constructed, incorporating some individual touches, and this one is no exception. Very nicely finished in deep blue, and the interior is also lovely, with excellent blue leather, cocktail cabinet, occasional seats electric windows all round, and a rear sunroof. The car is solid, the doors closing with a satisfying ‘click’, and correct throughout. With the last enthusiast owner in the USA for nearly forty years, running very sweetly, and offered prepared, serviced, MoT tested, and UK registered, following its repatriation. Driven by ourselves 400 miles over a weekend, and running very smoothly, performing well. Characterful, imposing, stylish, comfortable, as well as being easy and enjoyable to drive.
SALE AGREED Chassis No. CLW12. Reg No. 901 YUL. £55,000. Snippets: Delivered to W. S. Boas, a Substitute District Judge for the Court located in the Haag, Amsterdam. At the time W.S. Boas was residing at the Doelen Hotel in Amsterdam. This magnificent building dates back to 1627 & has recently been identified as the “Kloveniersdoelen” for which Rembrandt originally painted his “Night Watch”. In 2009 after many years of research Dudok van Heel has managed to identify each of the 18 figures depicted within the portrait, no mean task indeed. Famous visitors to the Doelen have included the Beatles, Queen Victoria & the Empress Sissi, daughter of Duke Maximilian of Bavaria & wife of Emperor Franz Joseph – her cousin who was initially affianced to her sister! In 1867 Empress Sissi was crowned Queen of Hungary and 3 years later in 1870 whilst walking through Geneva she was assassinated! By November 1955 CLW12 had returned to England and it is noted on the chassis cards that the owner was then Louis R Rawlings of 37 Grosvenor Square, earlier occupants of this property include Duke of Bolton, Marquis Londonderry, Hon Lawson JP & Baron Wenlock. In the 1970’s the car was again shipped to USA & since then has led a somewhat glamorous life mingling with the stars of the big screen with roles in the films Ocean’s Eleven & High Roller!
About Us
The Real Car Company was established in 1987 by Ray Arnold & Ian Johnstone. It was a hobby that 'Got out of hand'. Our interest in cars of the type that we now sell goes back to our childhoods, and ownership back to the 1970's. Gradually more cars started passing through our hands, and by 1986 we had decided to make a full time occupation of buying and selling the cars that we love.
We started with a single car (all we could afford) which we sold quickly, and before we knew it we had 4 or 5 on our hands! This was alongside another business that we were involved in at the time. In the Spring of 1988 we gave up the other business, (exhaust systems), rented part of the premises that we still operate from now, and went full time. We had a good start in the boom years of the late eighties, which set us up well enough for us to ride the storm of recession in the years that followed. As the years went on the number of cars going through our hands increased gradually, we built up a workforce, and now in 2009 we carry a stock of around 40 to 50 vehicles and there are ten of us here. In 1999 we were awarded 'International Classic Car Dealer of the Year' by Classic Cars Magazine. The market for 'our' kind of cars is nicely stable, generally prices are creeping upwards all the time, and we feel that investing in a car - or cars - of the type that we sell is generally a great place to put your money. Don't do it just for investment, but you can get a great deal of pleasure from these vehicles, prices are - in our opinion - unlikely to drop, and you can't drive a share certificate! Some prices in the last three or four years have moved up considerably, and these cases have shown a tremendous return on investment. Over the last fifteen years or so we have brought home several hundred cars from the USA, and we are always looking for more. If you know of a Rolls-Royce or Bentley anywhere in the world, in absolutely any condition, please let us know. Distance no object, commissions happily paid. We always particularly enjoy the 'barn finds'. |
