Up for sale, a 1962 Supro Martinique Valtrol electric guitar in excellent, 100% original condition and in good working order.  One of the rarer and more desirable Res-o-Glass Supro models, the Martinique features three pickups including one that is embedded in the rosewood saddle of the guitar.  Recently the Martinique has been a hot commodity, due in no small part to the fact that Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys credited a Martinique with creating many of the signature sounds on their breakout "Brothers" record (with the help of some exotic fuzz pedals of course).  This first year Martinique is clean and complete with the original hardshell case!

The tones that the Martinique delivers are varied and rich, with the bridge pickup delivering a shimmering, thinned out acoustic style percussive tone, due to its design and placement inside the bridge itself.  The "other" bridge pickup in the usual position is extremely powerful, easily overdriving a small tube amp with rich harmonics, hollow twang and present midrange.  The neck pickup by contrast is dark and meaty, with a bit of bark and an overall tone that makes notes on the plain strings sound very full and round.  The low E in particular resonates a bit louder at times than the other wound strings, which can be ideal for getting fingerpicked chord progressions to ring out with clear bass accompaniment.

The neck has a medium C profile that borders on the chunky side and fills the palm nicely.  The original narrow/low vintage fretwire has been professionally leveled, crowned and dressed to play cleanly all the way up the neck with no excessive buzzing or dead spots.  These necks do not have adjustable truss rods, but rest assured this one is much straighter than most, with the proper amount of relief and no notable humps or valleys.  The stock plastic Supro logo is intact on the "Gumby" headstock, and the single line Kluson Deluxe tuning machines turn smoothly and hold pitch well with their original plastic tulip buttons.

All of the electronics work as they should, with individual Volume and Tone controls for each pickup, conveniently located above their corresponding pickup.  All of the original hardware is present including the art deco style trapeze tailpiece and pickguard with white pinstriping that is still mostly intact.  The two-piece fiberglass body (marketed as "Res-o-Glass) is reinforced with wood, and the rare white rubber piping connecting the two halves is only seen on the earliest Martiniques.  All of the original wiring is intact, with untouched solder joints and Stackpole pots that date to mid '62.  Cosmetically, the guitar is extremely clean, with some light scuffs and faint buckle rash around the contours of the back and a bit of oxidation on the edges of the pickup covers, but no serious or structural wear of any kind!  The neck binding has also aged and checked in spots, but is well affixed to the neck and it's purely expected patina.

The original hardshell case is in great shape, with the standard gray Supro tolex on the majority of the case, with white ends, working latches and the original handle.
