An interesting look at London at different times in its long history, the Chapters cover: - The London of Pater Tamesis. The London of Dick Whittington. The London of Sir Christopher Wren. The London of Dr. Samuel Johnson. The London of Winston Churchill. The London of Bertie Wooster. The London of the Last Butlers. The London of Oscar Wilde. The London of Sherlock Holmes; at Home. The London of Sherlock Holmes: at Work. The London of Geoffrey Chaucer. The London of John Keats and Friends.

From the sleeve-notes: - "What city in the world can compare with London in magnificence and intrinsic fascination? As one reads Blake Ehrlich's 'London on the Thames' the answer is immediately obvious - none. Each borough, each street, has a separate and distinct flavour derived from almost two thousand years of civilised habitation. Mr. Ehrlich takes the reader on a tour of London which will make those familiar with it relive their experiences, while those who have not explored this unique city will find themselves impatient to visit it. But it is not merely a book for those who can go or have gone to London. This is a book which will also delight Londoners themselves, and, at the other extreme, armchair travellers with an interest in history, politics, architecture, the arts and all those cultural refinements of which London has long been the custodian. The intriguing characters, famous and infamous, who have made London the variegated metropolis it is, parade through 'London on the Thames' revealing sometimes humorous, sometimes macabre vignettes which lend a human touch to the story of this most human of cities. Kings and Queens, Ministers and merchants, characters as far removed as the rebellious Wat Tyler, the revered Lord Nelson, the imperious Duke of Wellington, Max Beerbohm, the cynical satirist, the Merry Monarch's mistress Nell Gwyn, the diarists, the artists, the writers and the talkers, are all brought to life complete with the myths and claims which surround them. Architects like Sir Christopher Wren and Inigo Jones, who made great contributions - and some blunders - are given their just due, for London's buildings themselves seem to have developed personalities and loyalties of their own and they are generously pictured throughout, described and explored, entertainingly and in depth. Blake Ehrlich's knowledge of and feeling for London is nothing short of phenomenal and his love for the great city, his pleasure in the idiosyncrasies of her places and her people, and above all his infectious enthusiasm for her, glow on every page of this captivating book".

Please Note: that ebay now take 10% of your postage money for doing nothing, this is on top of the commission they earn for selling the item, and the percentage of the whole that paypal take for processing the payment, this new imposition has inevitably put P&P prices up to leave enough to actually pack and post the item.
