1971 Ducati R/T 450
The R/T 450 was Ducati’s last four-stroke, off-road competition motorcycle. Built initially for the buoyant American market, the R/T 450 was brought to the Italian market a year later with the necessary lights and instrumentation. Despite being such a pretty, fun-to-ride bike, just 400 were sold in total as it was a bigger, faster ‘Enduro’-type machine rather than a ‘scrambler’.
The 450 overhead-valve, four-stroke single featured Ducati’s lauded desmodromic valve-gear, negating the need for valve springs and allowing higher revs. Power then went through a five-speed transmission to alloy wheels and adjustable suspension. Typically Ducati, the R/T 450 was very well engineered and extremely good looking.
Our ’71 R/T 450 was discovered a few years ago in a shed in California. It had been barely used then forgotten since the 70s. After being imported the Ducati was treated to a light restoration, mainly refinishing and polishing parts where necessary. The engine, on strip-down, turned out as expected to be in perfect condition. Any parts replaced have been retained and go with the bike for the benefit of originality. Since this light restoration the bike has hardly been used and only transported in covered transport. It is in better than new condition as validated by two ‘1st’ rosettes that come with the bike.
The bike starts easily, making a fantastic (and loud) noise from its unsilencer exhaust, and runs and rides perfectly.
This is a rare machine in extraordinary condition that would be perfect for a collector
