In 1998, my 1979 Range Rover 3.5 V8 had some serious body problems, but was otherwise sound – it had only done a couple of thousand miles on an RPi ‘stealth’ rebuild engine – I decided to have some ‘fun’ and use it as the basis of a hybrid Land Rover project.

The body came off, and everything was stripped from the chassis which was shortened to 88” wheelbase by a friend who’s a professional welder, and a new military rear cross member was fitted. The chassis was cleaned and any repairs made, then all was painted with 2 pack paint. The original Range Rover outriggers were left in place until I knew what the new body would need.

The engine, gearbox and axles were cleaned and refitted to the original mountings, and the rear propshaft shortened to suit the new wheelbase.

Although the original idea was to put a ‘series’ 88” body on it to make a SWB V8 coiler, I hatched a plan to put a scratch built body on the now rolling chassis, and to start this off I took the original RR bulkhead and front floor / gearbox tunnel, and temporarily mounted this on the chassis using bits of timber and PVC piping to hold everything together to start to work things out – it got to the point where it was driveable but with only the transmission handbrake.

At which point, I lost the use of the workshop, and the project was mothballed. The vehicle is still registered and has been declared SORN every year. I have the VIN plate and V5.

A couple of house moves later, and I’ve now admitted to myself that I will never have the means, motive and opportunity at the same time to finish off the project, and I need the space this is all occupying – so regretfully it’s all looking for a new home.

Everything is showing the signs of having been stood up for a decade, but the engine can be seen running (without silencer) at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFNHRlNohBw – it still runs but needs a bit of a tune, I started it and drove it out of the garage for the photos – clutch, gearbox, power steering all still fine.

So what we have is a ’79 3.5 V8 Range Rover 4 speed manual without the body, with a strong engine and a shortened chassis – a blank sheet of canvas for someone else’s project, or a source of spares to keep a trialer going.

Engine: 3.5 litre RPI fully reconditioned ‘Stealth’ spec engine (app. 185 BHP) – Piper 270/110 camshafts, Cloyes Duplex timing chain, composite gaskets, mains stud kit, modified oil pump base. Twin SU carbs from SD1 with K&N Air filters – jetted and set up by RPi for this engine. Mallory dual point distributor with high energy coil, splitfire plugs.

Gearbox is the original 4 speed manual with aftermarket overdrive. The vehicle has a full Rimmer Bros. stainless sports exhaust system, suspension has polybushes fitted. Plenty of chunky rubber on all four wheels, and the spare has never been driven on - all 5 are International Tracker 205/R16 on original R/R steel rims.

Also included is the sale is everything useful I kept from the donor – VIN plate, wiring loom, bolts brackets etc, and spare oil filters etc. and two bucket seats that could do with new covers. Haynes manual, Land Rover workshop manual paperwork for the engine etc,
