Four day tickets to Kew Gardens plus behind-the-scenes tour of the Tropical Nursery
This auction lot includes four day tickets for the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, plus an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour
of the Tropical Nursery, usually off limits to the public
The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, is an internationally renowned centre of botanical research and education. It houses the world’s
largest and most diverse collection of living plants, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The tickets give full access to the gardens
from 9.30am (closing times vary throughout the year); the date of your visit will be organised directly with your tour leader, James Beattie
(please see below).
The Tropical Nursery is the largest glass house at Kew, housing its reserve scientific collections. This is where plants are cultivated for use
in displays in the Palm House, Temperate House, Waterlily House and Princess of Wales conservatories.

There are over 45,000 plants held in the Tropical Nursery at any one time, from various tropical and subtropical habitats around the world. The nursery is divided into21 climatic environments, each separately controlled and monitored. Your tour will include the Cacti and Succulents, Moist Tropics, Orchids, and Temperate and Conservation collections, with the chance to see Kew’s extensive collection of Nepenthes, and spectacular flowers including Kew’s giant waterlilies and titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum), one of the world’s largest flowering plants, found only in Sumatra.* You may also get to see Kew scientists at work.

Your tour will be conducted by James Beattie, Collection Horticulturist. James has worked and studied at Kew for seven years. His role includes looking after the temperate and carnivorous collections, pest and disease control, propagation of plants for the public display houses, and training staff and students in all aspects of practical horticulture. He also conducts propagation research, investigating the best ways to grow rare and threatened plants, and shares this information with partners overseas to aid conservation and restoration efforts. All proceeds raised by the sale of this auction lot will go to the Sumatran Orangutan Society. Last year, James visited the forest restoration site in Sumatra, run by our partners the OIC, where he shared his expertise with our team and went in search of Nepenthes, carnivorous pitcher plants. Kew houses many species of Nepenthes from Sumatra which, like orangutans, are threatened by habitat loss.

"Having seen the amazing work the team are doing out there and helped out, it's great to be able to continue to support SOS and their efforts
to save the Sumatran Orangutan,” says James. “I hope the tickets and tour will raise a good amount for the cause!”
* Flowers seen will depend on time of year.
