Album notes
Now aged 39, South London rapper Roots Manuva may well be the elder statesman of British hip-hop, but his eighth studio album, 4everevolution, shows he can still summarize the state of the nation more succinctly in one line that most MCs half his age manage over the course of an entire album. "Cost of life so cheap round here/but the cost of living ain't cheap round here," he cleverly delivers in his distinctive, sleepy Cockney drawl on the cinematic "Skid Valley," a diatribe against the government featuring dramatic, James Bond theme-style strings and impassioned soulful vocals courtesy of Skunk Anansie's Skin. It's just one example of the effortless, lyrical wordplay and socio-political messages on offer throughout its eclectic 17 tracks, which embrace a whole host of urban sounds, from wobbling the dubstep on "Here We Go Again," a cautionary tale of a friend who's taken the wrong path in life, to the twitchy grime of "Revelation" to the woozy, East Coast hip-hop beats and skank guitars of "Who Goes There?" Indeed, Manuva's trademark swagger and acerbic wit are still very much in full flow, but this is by far his most versatile record to date. For every seven-minute slice of challenging, ambient electro-clash, ("The Throes of It"), there is a Radio 1-friendly attempt at soulful, 2-step garage ("Beyond This World"), and for every song which evokes the late-night, inner-city streets of London ("Takes Time"), there is a sunshine-fueled ditty more suited to the beaches of the Caribbean ("Wha' Mek?"). It's an approach which could finally reap the rewards that have so far eluded his critically acclaimed but commercially ignored career, and although the likes of the Basement Jaxx-esque ragga of "Go Champ" and the disco-tinged collaboration with Toddla T ("Watch Me Dance") are potential club anthems, this is no Dizzee Rascal-esque mainstream make-over. Instead, 4everevolution is an appropriately titled, subtle progression which proves that intelligent hip-hop and accessible urban pop don't have to be mutually exclusive, and in the process, Roots Manuva has produced his best record since his 2001 breakthrough, Run Come Save Me. ~ Jon O'Brien

This week is Cystic Fibrosis Week. "What's Cystic Fibrosis?" you might ask. Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is one of the UK's most common life-threatening genetic diseases that affects over 9,000 British citizens. Caused by a faulty gene that around 1 in 25 people carry, CF mainly affects the lungs and digestive system (along with the host of other symptoms). Each week five babies are born with CF and while there has been vast improvements in treatment of CF only half the CF population will live past 41. Heavy stuff, we know.

To help raise money and awareness of the disease, we've decided to auction off some rare and limited edition goodies found in the Ninja Tune & Big Dada warehouse.

As part of our giveaway we're giving away a signed copy of Roots Manuva's latest album '4everevolution'.

Press Release:

4everevolution is just a few seconds under an hour long, consists of seventeen tracks and covers every style from wonky reggae through pop-funk, street spitting, straight up hip hop, sung ballads and epic death-disco. It deepens much of what Mr Manuva has already achieved over a glorious decade of innovation, but also throws in enough new ideas and adventures to last most creative artists a lifetime. We think it's his very best work since Run Come Save Me. We're wondering (whisper it) whether it might be his best album ever.

Much of 4everevolution was made in conjunction with various members of Smith’s Banana Klan crew. Production for “Revelation” and string arrangements on Smith’s own “Skid Valley” came from Gibbs King, Ollie and Olmino produced the monster-funk number “Beyond This World”. Meanwhile, current and former band members play drums, guitar and bass on a variety of tracks (as did Mr Manuva himself), while longtime side-man Ricky Ranking crops up with vocal contributions on “Wha’ Mek” and the darkest of toasts on “In The Throes Of It”. DJ MK, meanwhile, adds chorus vocals to “Banana Skank” – a croonsome new direction for the veteran turntablist! – and Daddy Kope spits in the style of UK hip hop’s finest on “Crow Bars”. The only other productions on the record not from Manuva’s own hand arrives via the antipodes. Producers Dizz1 (“Here We Go Again”) and Monkeymarc (“Who Goes There?”) show how much of Manuva’s unquantized lope has been absorbed by producers on the other side of the world. In addition to Ranking and MK, vocal contributions come from Skunk Anansie’s Skin (on the state-of-the-nation diatribe “Skid Valley”, which also features Skunk Anansie’s legendary bass player, Cass Lewis), new talents Rokhsan (on both first single “Get The Get” and “Beyond This World”) and Elan Tamara (“The Path”) compete for glory with the beauty of the voice of a veteran like Spikey Tee (“Here We Go Again”). Perhaps the most touching singing on the record, though, comes from Manuva himself, who flexes his melodic jones on a trio of tracks which perhaps reaches its peak on the loping, self-effacing ballad “Wha’ Mek?”

Overall, despite the presence of this or that guest, the vision remains that of one man. Roots Manuva has honed his craft across four previous studio albums, picking up a MOBO, plus Brit and Mercury nominations along the way. This record, though, represents some of his freshest, most urgent work. Whether castigating politicians or his own failings, joking about girls or spinning yarns about men in love with their computers, ruminating on the void at the heart of "urban" music or bigging himself up, crooning an apology or growling ridiculous sex rhymes, Roots Manuva remains one of the foremost lyricists and musicians of his generation. Cherish him – he’s the very best we’ve got.

"An album that's contemplative, insightful and filled with a beleaguered sense of the hard-scrabble nature of contemporary life" - The Guardian, 4/5
