Below is an overview of how my babies are created. Not every baby is created with the same features or details, please check on the "At A Glance" listing to see the individual features of this precious baby. I have decided to change my Page layout so that you can focus more on the photographs.
Preemie
I strive to make my precious babies look and feel like a real baby. Each baby is painted with the most care and always keeping in mind the represented age of the finished doll. When painting a Preemie baby I endeavour to create a translucent and realistic skin tone, but like to avoid giving the baby the typically dark preemie skin tones.
Newborn
When representing a newborn baby, I strive to include as many "just born" details as I can, including the slightly bruised birthing mark on the forehead and the little scratches and scrapes which come with birth. I will still however aim for a beautiful soft newborn complexion. has a multitude of baby blemishes, milk spots and the tiniest capillaries.
Toddler
When representing a toddler I like to capture the softer more even skin tones, bordering on Peaches and Cream, but still adding as much depth to the skin as possible. Most of my Toddler babies have the odd little freckle or mole.
My precious buba's have my classic Precious Non-Painted look.
All of the colour you see is contained within the vinyl surface, not painted inside, but painted on the outside in such micro thin layers of Genesis heat set paint. The technique I use allows the paint to actually soak into the vinyl surface, I only ever cure the paint twice during my painting process, this allows the paint to blend, creating an amazing translucency to the finished skin.
I DO NOT used any texture on my baby's so the skin always feels soft and smooth to the touch. There is no need to add varnish all over the vinyl, the Genesis heat set paints when used correctly are permanent.
I always take really close photographic shots of my Precious Babies, you would not see this close with the naked eye, but I want you to see the beautiful detail in the baby's skin! The lips and nails are realistically painted and then sealed with a satin varnish for durability.
Limb length and body plates
Some of my babies have full limbs, some have 3/4 limbs. Babies with full limbs have full length vinyl limbs which are attached to the body with a small circular fabric covered joint. The babies with 3/4 limbs are vinyl to mid way up the thigh and mid way up the top of the arm.
Some babies will come with a Body plate, these can be used with a cross over vest or something similar giving the illusion that the whole body is vinyl. They do look quite cute when displayed with the body plate tucked inside the nappy.
Painted Hair
I specialise in painted hair, I have always painted my OOAK preemie sculpts and always loved the effect and illusion of very fine down like hair. Each strand of hair is individually painted to give a real sense of depth. My babies have beautiful swirled crowns, sometimes they will have a double crown, I will always include pictures of the hair. They have the finest down like hairs around the forehead. Painted hair has it's advantages, there is no fussing with styling the hair, and absolutely no risk of the hair rubbing away over time when you are cuddling, or changing babies clothing.
I know painted hair is not to everyone’s taste, but it really does have to be seen to appreciate the realism it portraits. I love painting eyebrows and they are painted to match the colour and thickness of the hair. My sleeping Buba's have micro rooted human hair lashes, donated as always by my son Thomas.. Thanks Buddy!
My open eye babies have mouth blown Laucher glass eyes and if they have eyelashes they will be hand applied. Occasionally when I am creating a very newborn baby with open eyes I will omit the eyelashes to maintain the very newborn look, I will paint around the eyes to give the illusion of eyelashes.
Micro Rooted Hair
After taking a three year break from rooting to specialise in painted hair I have now returned to rooting, I had completely lost my passion for rooting, but after some gentle persuasion from my daughter Abbie and my wonderful husband I am now rooting again!
Each baby is rooted with the highest quality mohair on the market, I use a combination of different colours and try to vary my styles each time I root.
When I describe a head to be "Micro rooted" this means that each hair has been implanted into the scale individually using a tiny 43 or 46 gauge needle, each follicle contains a single strand of hair which is rooted in the direction I wish the hair to lay.
When I describe the hair to be "Hand Rooted" this means that I have used 3-4 single strands of hair in each follicle to give a fully effect to the hair. The hairs are rooted from the natural growth end and there are is unsightly stubble or wayward strands coming from the follicles, the hairs follow the same directional route and so look very neat and tidy.
Babies hair can be easily styled using a little water and a flat headed toothbrush, very often I will show wet and dry hair pictures to give you a better idea of how you can style babies hair.
I use the best quality "Simply Reborn" German made white doe suede body, these bodies are professionally sewn and have traditional cotter pin (as used in quality artist bears) jointed shoulders and hips which make posing baby just so easy. There are NO cable ties used on my precious babies, so there are no little lumps where the limbs are attached to the body, the bodies I use give a seamless finish.
My babies are filled with a combination of glass beads, baby fat and faux fleece; they are always very soft and cuddly, but have a very realistic weight in relation to the represented age of the baby. The limbs are weighted with ultra granule glass beads making my babies the most life like and balanced babies.
One of my favourite parts of the reborning process is making each baby ''feel'' real, I weight my babies so that they have the perfect balance. Baby's head will need to be supported when you lift them up, my babies are such a pleasure to hold, and just snuggles into your arms.
