Their can be few of us who have not experienced the frustration of poor quality drills at some stage in our lives.

So many cheap, poor quality drills exist that it is difficult to avoid them at some time or other.

A wise man once told me "it is a wealthy man that can afford the extravagance of cheap drills"

That proverb is as true today as it has always been.

Basically, we must look upon drilling as a science and give the operation the credence it deserves. It requires care and expertise.

Many considerations must be given to drilling a simple hole - including - speed, feed, material being drilled and lubricant being used. However, none of these considerations may have much merit if they are applied to a poor quality drill.

Many types of drill exist and for us to sort these it would take considerable pages of the written word. However we can simplify here and say that HSS Jobber Drills fall into two categories - roll forged and ground flute.

It is our experience that the latter are the better drills - for the reason stated below.

The flute of a roll forged drill is formed, as the title suggests, by forging and rolling/twisting to produce the flute.
This process is the cheaper form of manufacture.

The flute of a ground drill is formed, again, as the title suggests by grinding.
This process is a more expensive option.

It is our opinion - formed through practical experience - that ground flutes offer superior performance in their key role of removing swarf from the cutting point both swiftly and effectively thus leading to more efficient and satisfactory drilling.

The Dormer A002 HSS Drill is a superb drill and offers superior performance. Take a look at its pedigree.

It has a standard helix. It is right hand and has wider, ground, flutes for efficient chip removal.

Its standard 118 degree point geometry is the most suitable for general purpose engineering work.

Titanium Nitride Coated (TiN) on the tip for high wear resistance and lower friction which allows for higher cutting speeds, increased performance and longer life.

It has an improved web design which optimises strength and increases feed capability.

It is optimised throughout the helix range for greater rigidity.

Titanium Nitride Coated (TiN) coating is focused on the working surfaces to resist both flank and crater wear.

Special Dormer P.S. Point which increases the ease of penetration, improves hole size and perhaps most importantly, provides for accurate centering.

The Dormer A002 is our drill of choice. They are used daily in the allhardwarestore workshops for a variety of jobs.

We are delighted to recommend them to you.

N.B. The Dormer A002 HSS Drill may be sharpened successfully. It should be remembered however that this action will result in the loss of the TiN coating to the tip.
