Steps of acne treatment using hot steam:
1) Add Herbs -- A mixture of herbs and steam is very soothing to your skin and senses. Reduce the boiling water to the minimal temperature needed to produce steam and add a handful of herbs.
The following herbs are appropriate for acne and oily skin: yarrow flowers, peppermint leaves, lemongrass, witch hazel leaves or twigs, rosebuds, lavender flowers, sage, elderflowers and lemon peel. These herbs are known for their astringent and antibacterial properties.
2) Pre-Steam Skin Preparation -- Cleanse the skin, taking care to remove all make-up and residue from your face before steaming. Follow cleansing with light exfoliation to remove dead skin cells, makeup and debris from the surface of your skin. Use a light hand to avoid irritating your skin. When finished, pat your skin dry with a clean towel.
3) Steam Your Skin -- Place a towel or cloth over your head to create a steam tent and lean over the steaming water for approximately 15 minutes. If you are steaming via the stove top, keep your face about 12 inches from the top of the pot to keep the steam from burning your skin. Breathe deeply, inhaling the steam and relaxing the muscles in your face.
After steaming, lightly pat-dry your skin with a clean towel. Although face steam is an excellent addition to your acne or oily-skin care regimen, do not steam more than twice a week.
4) Apply Toner -- Dip a pure cotton ball in toner and apply it to your skin. Repeat, changing cotton balls, until the ball's surface is clean after being passed over your skin.
Avoid alcohol-based astringents, which strip the skin. Indeed, the oiliest skin requires nothing stronger than witch hazel. If you are tempted to apply straight alcohol to these areas in hopes of quashing acne, think again. To even the oiliest of complexions, alcohol is so intense an astringent it typically results in more oil being sent to the area.

Visible skin is dead skin and to produce new skin cells, cells divide in a process called mitosis. When they are new, skin cells are plump and firm. Over time, these cells migrate upwards through the layers of skin and undergo profound physiological changes. By the time they reach the uppermost layer of skin, the cells are flat, hard and dead. They are bound to each other and to the living tissue below via a type of cellular cement. These dead skin cells provide a protective barrier function for the body to keep environmental, bacterial, fungal and viral aggressors from entering the body and to keep too much moisture from escaping. In youth, cellular turnover takes, on average, 28 days. As people age, however, they do not shed the dead cells as quickly, and skin begins to look old, depleted and tired.

1) Perspiration -- There are two types of sweat glands in the human body. The eccrine sweat glands cover the entire body but are most prevalent on the soles of the feet, the palms of the hands and on the forehead. They secrete sweat that is mostly water, but contains small amounts of salt, as well. The apocrine sweat glands are larger and located mainly in the armpits and genital area.
Dr. Patricia K. Farris, Clinical Assistant Professor at Tulane University, describes the sweat glands as, ‘long, coiled hollow tubes of cells’ whose main function is to cool the body, eliminate toxins, hydrate skin and maintain the protective acid mantle on the skin. During the steam phase of a facial, skin begins to sweat. As perspiration rises to the skin's surface, it carries with it dirt, debris, bacterial matter, organic compounds and sloughed-off skin cells. This cleansing effect helps to keep skin clean.
2) Plug Softening--The average square inch of skin contains approximately 650 sweat glands, reports Free Science. High Beam Research notes that approximately 65 hair follicles and 97 sebaceous glands reside in that same area.
The sebaceous glands, which empty into hair follicles, produce a waxy oil called sebum. Sebum lubricates hair as it grows from a root in the follicle and pushes its way out a pore. Sebum also lubricates skin and, along with perspiration, makes up the acid mantle that protects skin from outside aggressors, such as bacterial and viral invaders. According to Farris, a healthy acid mantle has a pH of between 4.5 and 6.5. This slightly acidic barrier keeps moisture from evaporating too quickly from skin and helps form the "cement" that keeps a layer of dry, dead skin cells fused to the surface of skin. This layer, while it begins to look gray and dull as you mature, has a protective function.
As skin ages, its turnover rate slows considerably. In a healthy, young adult, cells slough off after about 28 days, keeping skin young and fresh looking. As you age, that rate increases up to about 50 days. Regardless of turnover rate, however, dead cells left on the surface of skin can bind with sebum, dirt, bacteria and other debris to form a plug in a pore's opening. The plugs cause sebum to back up within the hair follicles, causing what we know as blackheads and whiteheads. Steam softens the plugs, making extraction easier and less likely to cause damage.
3) Circulation -- The heat from a steamer increases the skin's temperature. When that happens, the tiny blood vessels within skin begin to dilate, which allows more blood to flow to the surface of skin. Because blood carries nutrients, steaming the skin brings more of these youth-preserving, skin-enhancing properties to your skin.

Sebum, the natural skin oil that moisturizes, protects and lubricates hair and skin, is produced by sebaceous glands located in hair follicles. When sebum becomes trapped in a follicle, ether because of excessive sebum production, or because the follicular opening has become clogged, acne breakouts result. One form of breakout, a blackhead, is helped when steam is applied to the face. The steam softens blackhead plugs so they will easily and gently release from the follicular opening. The buildup of sebum inside the follicle can then flow naturally.
