CATEGORIES: Art: Prints (Antique pre 1900)   Prints & Bookplates   National Encyclopaedia   Maritime History

SOURCE: "The National Encyclopaedia. A Dictionary of Universal Knowledge by Writers of Eminence in Literature, Science and Art",  published c. 1885 William Mackenzie, London, Edinburgh & Glasgow. This was a high-end publication, so all the engravings and chromolithographs are highly detailed, and well printed. They were produced by experts in the relevant field, and intended for educational use, so were meticulously accurate, as well as works of art in their own right.

GENERAL NOTE ON CONDITION: The prints from this encyclopaedia series are over 120 years old, and there is the expected evidence of age, which may include toning especially at the page edges, foxing, handling marks,  slight waviness of the paper and a degree of fragility. Most maps and engravings from this period were bound into books, rather than issued separately. That is the case with this series, but the plates were carefully bound in, using a method that minimises damage to folded plates / maps. Stitch holes are visible at the binding edge, with possible slight loss. There may be glue residue. The binding edge is untrimmed.  Any apparent border around the scanned or photographed images in the listing has been provided so that buyers may assess the print in its entirety - it's not on the actual item.

ABOUT OUR VINTAGE AND ANTIQUE PRINTS: We sell vintage and antique prints, maps and other paper items, the majority of them between 60 and 200 years old. As with most such prints and maps, ours were first issued bound into books, the older ones having been printed separately. These illustrations are also termed "plates" or "book plates". We guarantee the authenticity of our prints, and that they are as described in the listing. While all vintage and antique paper items can be expected to show evidence of age, to varying degrees, we aim to show condition in the photos, and to mention anything significant.  We offer some of our vintage prints mounted ready to frame, in good quality, ph-neutral, white-core mountboard, and presented in a clear cellophane sleeve. Our loose prints and maps also come in a cellophane sleeve, along with firm card or board for protection. We maintain a no-quibble return policy.
