Hi there,

We keep a lot of poultry and waterfowl here in Essex (near Southend). Different pure breed hens, hybrid hens, ducks and turkeys which we sell throughout the year. This means that we can provide fertile eggs for you to hatch at home. We also have helpful free fact sheets that give advice about hatching eggs and chicks here

This Listing

Here we have for sale 6 very rare Ixworth eggs for you to hatch. These are a beautiful large heavy white breed which have pink legs and a small red comb. They are great egg layers and are supposed to be the best tasting chicken (we haven’t tried any yet!). We keep a large flock of these, which we understand are still on the list of endangered breeds of poultry. Originally bred as a dual purpose bird – great for eggs and the table. We have spent years acquiring the large breeding group of different parentage.

Please - an important note about fertile eggs. We know our hens and ducks are fertile because from the start of March we hatch them off ourselves. We also provide fertile eggs to local schools etc and everyone feed’s back to us about their good hatch rates.

When you leave feedback, please do this on the standard of eggs sent, the care given to wrapping them, speed of postage etc. Please do not comment on hatch rate as this really is affected by postage and how they are incubated once you receive them. It is unfair to rate us on how successful your hatch rate is. Sadly on occasions people will leave us negative feedback stating no eggs were fertile, yet the preceding feedback may say they had 100% hatch. If an egg does not develop, this is not necessarily because it was not fertile, but more likely the viability of the fertility was affected by the post journey. As an example, our postman arrived with a package last Summer. He pulled up in his van and we saw there was a package on his dashboard wedged behind the windscreen. When he gave it to us, it was very warm. If this had of been fertile eggs, then they would no longer be viable for hatching...

Remember even top hatcheries are lucky if they achieve 75-80% hatching. So many factors affect hatch rates, particularly postage – which is really luck of the draw. If you think about it, sending eggs in the post is inherently dangerous and risky. Having said that, we usually find, due to the way we wrap them, that they do survive the post. BUT it often depends on what type of journey they have had...

Please look at all of the feedback that we receive, because there are some people making negative comments but the vast majority of people are very happy.

We are always happy for you to collect the eggs, so that you can see the parents and the young chicks and ducklings we raise for sale. Collecting the eggs does give a higher percentage rate of hatching, but for those too far we are happy to send, but we cannot be held responsible (or send replacements) for the actions of Mr Postman.

We send the eggs out asap once you make a purchase, checking each egg is the correct shape, no cracks, dimples, blemishes etc. Sometimes we get a lot of orders at once and if we get too many at once (or large orders) then we just end the listing for a week or so to meet the orders, then relist them. We don't post Saturdays so eggs don't sit in the postal system Sundays.

Obviously our hens are not machines and now and then they have a rest from laying. Sometimes we offer to refund people if a lot of orders come in on the same day and/or the hens take a break and stop producing eggs.

Postage Costs

We charge £9.50 postage for 6 eggs. This may seem a lot but Royal Mail now charge £6.75 and the remainder of the charge is to cover the actual packaging, tape and stickers.

Also, if you are going to buy these eggs, then join the site Martin Lewis the money adviser often mentions. It is free to join, and basically you get a percentage back of the money you spend on most other Internet sites. Just click the link below;-
