A RAGGED SCHOOLING
A picture of Edwardian life in the heart of an industrial city. Robert Roberts relives his childhood in a
world of smoky chimneys, gasometers and grimy terraced cottages in Salford.
Despite the grinding struggle to survive, there was no poverty in the games children played on the
cobbles streets between the railway and the canals. He describes with humour and clarity of first-hand
experience novelties like the magic lantern and ' By Joe ' cinema. He also describes the problems of
growing up. His mother was a determined and intelligent woman who made their little corner shop pay
in spite of a husband fonder of the bottle than business. Robert Roberts in the classic slum, but not
quite of it, recalls an upbringing rich only in experience and a school of life that has vanished along
with the slums
