They made widescreen adaptations of this evocative book, the most notorious being the 'Branagh Brigade''s roughshod, self-absorbed treatment of over- priveleged boors exporting their condescension and laced bodices to 1900s Italy (I think). Synopsis: ridiculously spoiled brat Lucy (Bonham-Carter) closely chaperoned by (the brilliant) Maggie Smith spreads her ingenue boredom across the whole of Tuscany Sardinia Napoli and Corleone where she meets, among other nouveau riche mannakins and assorted travellers, My Boy George ( not that one. Julian Sands) who has the personality of a 4 by 2 plank of plywood and his eccentric Aged Parent Denholm Eliott. This oaken oaf falls in love with Lucy who is already to be engaged to foppish Daniel Day Lewis. Beastly Boy George lures her feverishly with tales of beeswax, linseed oil and joiners' filler and eventually gets the girl, Lord help them both. Essentially, this Bloomsbury burp is a better experience than Branagh's Islington mob traversing Italy patronising Italians at every opportunity and being insufferably egotistical as a secondary vice. Its colourful enough but please do put Ms Bonham Carter, Simon Callow, Sands, Eliott and Co. out of your mind whilst reading. It'll go better for you if you do.Read full review
