ANTIQUE EARLY 19thC NAPOLEONIC PRISONER OF WAR DOMINOES IN WOODEN BOX, c1810
An antique Georgian early 19th Century hand-crafted set of bone dominoes in original wooden box. This is a nine spot set, which is sadly incomplete (see photos). They have been hand carved from bone. Domino sets like this are widely regarded as having been made by French prisoners of war during the Napoleonic War.
Dominoes became very popular in Italy in the early 18th Century. The game quickly spread through Europe and became very popular in France. Dominoes were then bought into Britain by French prisoners of war in the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815) and quickly became a popular game in the pubs and taverns of the time.
