I AM UNSURE OF IT'S HISTORY, IT IS PART OF MY NAVAL COLLECTION WHICH I AM SELLING DUE TO LACK OF SPACE.
A Royal Navy rum or "Grog" tub, as used on every British warship up until "Black Tot Day", 31st July 1970, when the daily rum ration was withdrawn. This ended a tradition that went back to 1655 when Jamaica was taken from the Spanish and rum became a staple on Royal Navy ships.
With the loss of the "Tot" and the rundown of the Royal Navy, these are rare items now and a real link with Britain's nautical past. Around 60 replica tubs were made in the '70s using the fittings from original tubs that had been broken up. These replicas can be identified by the Roman numerals they all have under the lid, and I'm delighted to say that this one has none.
