Alice's Adventures In Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. With forty-two illustrations by John Tenniel. Seventh thousand. Published by Macmillan And Co. (London) in 1867.

8vo. 7.0" x 5.0" inches , 192 pages

This book has been beautifully rebound by hand in the finest red Chieftan goatskin leather. With handmade red and gold marbled end-papers and red and grey headbands. Gold tooling to the spine with five raised bands. Black leather labels with gold blocked lettering and gold motif to the centre of front and back boards.

The book itself had been rebound sometime earlier in the 20th century, hence the gilding to the page edges and rounding to the page corners. As the cover was in fairly bad condition this copy was commissioned to be rebound by a family run UK bookbinder. Along with the work to the book cover, this copy also comes housed in a solander (clamshell) box which is covered in red colorado cloth and lined with black handmade paper.

The book itself is clean with some occasional spotting throughout. No tears to pages or pages missing. There is a small inscription to the top of the first original fly-leaf. Now tightly bound and protected within the solander box, this copy should last at least another 150 years!

Early printings of the first authorised English edition like this one were preceded only by the extraordinarily rare suppressed 1865 London edition, of which only about twenty copies are known to exist and the 1866 First Printing which was four thousand copies. Carroll disliked the 1865 edition so much that he had them all recalled and sent to the United States where the title pages were removed and new American ones inserted. Carrolls annoyance was with the typography and general look of the book. The enduring tale of a child's dreamworld was first originally issued in 1865 by Macmillan and Co. of London, but Carroll and the illustrator Tenniel were unhappy with the print quality of the illustrations and cancelled the issue, insisting the book be re-printed.
