Three-speed manual

V5 Registration Document:

Date of 1st Registration:

Ambassador Motorcycles were founded in 1946 by famous Brooklands racer, Irishman Kaye Don,  he established his factory in Ascot, they produced good quality motorcycles for a few years, and were later taken over by DMW (Dawson Motor Works)  production continued for a while, with an attempt to build a motor scooter, but production finally ceased in 1964.

This  bike 197cc was registered on 11/5/1955, and it retains its original transferable number  KFN 817,  also the Villiers engine matches the original brown log book, so I would think it is a bike worthy of restoration,  not just because of its rarity, but, also its originality.  The tinware is sound, and of course because it's a two stroke the petrol tank also is in sound condition,  having always contained a measure of oil along with the petrol.

The bike seems complete, but, as with all 'bikes in boxes' there will be some small pieces missing,  the owner prior to me bought it from a farmer and it genuinely had been stored in a barn for many years,  hence sound condition, on the down side however, at some time in its life someone had made a half hearted attempt to fit an Ariel Arrow 125cc engine, (one barrel sealed off) into it, I don't think it ever got to the running stage with this conversion, but, in doing so they cut off the upper engine mounts from the frame, these were just pieces of flat metal, and will be easy to replace, by anyone who can weld, also with the bike is a parts and instruction book .

The chap I bought it off stripped the original Villiers engine had it shot blasted, barrel rebored and found a correct new piston,  then as often happens, lost interest, so all it needs is paint, wheels doing, assembly and wiring,  doesn't sound much when you say it quick,  but worth it  as much rarer than Bantam or AMC two stroke.

Ask any questions or better still come to view if you're not too far away, I'm in Macclesfield, I can deliver U.K. mainland but these couriers nowadays seem to do it for next to nowt'.  Thanks for looking and good luck should you decide to bid.

On 06-Jul-14 at 11:51:34 BST, seller added the following information:

I have been contacted by the Vintage Motorcycle Club 'Ambassador marque specialist' who has informed me that this bike is indeed rare, it's the 'Popular' model and only four others are known to the marque register, this now being the fifth,  I can confirm that the numbers found on the engine and frame are the same as those on the original log book and modern V5c, they are 'as left factory'  also the registration number KFN 817 is transferable, once the motorcycle is up and running again.
