Description title by title:

The Ragamuffins

Set at the turn of the century (1890s - 1900s) in the East End of London it's about a baker, Arthur, who marries the  18-year-old Ellen after her parents were killed in a fire. Agnes, who has helped in the bakery for many years, is jealous of Arthur's young wife Ellen - a loathing fuelled in part by the feelings she has long held for the baker himself. Ellen meanwhile is starting to have doubts about her relationship with Arthur. When her parents died in a house fire, it was Arthur, her father's best friend who took her in. Afraid of facing the world alone she decided to marry him: a decision with consequences she is only just beginning to understand. When Ellen offers to help the young street orphan Micky, Agnes is quick to report her to Arthur for encouraging beggars. But Arthur considers giving Micky some work and Agnes knows she must act quickly or lose her job. The trap that she sets for Micky, howeve, has deadly consequences that no-one could have.

A Handful Of Sovereigns

Maggie Paige and her brother and sister are orphaned and left to fend for themselves. When starvation threatens, Maggie goes out to solicit men. She cannot go through with it, but the outing is destined to have surprising consequences.

Maybe This Time

Standing at the corner of Morning Lane on a Sunday lunchtime is a weekly ritual for sixteen-year-old Jane Flynn. With her parents ready to serve the Sunday roast, sending Jane to wait outside the pub is the only way her beloved brothers Shaun, Pat and Rory will finish their Guinness and return home. But when Rory sees Jane being harassed by local bully Barney Hobbs, it isn't long before the Lord's Day is interrupted with a flash of his Irish temper. Barney and Rory have a rivalry that goes back many years - a mutual hatred inflamed by the seductive Cathy Meadows, the girl who broke up Rory's relationship with the poor but pretty Josie Guntrip, the girl who broke his heart by leaving him for the better-off Barney. When Cathy returns to the East End, Rory finding himself besotted once more, and with Barney using Jane to get at him, he hasn't the time to give Josie a second thought. Which is a shame, because not only has Josie never stopped loving him, but with the death of her spiteful, overbearing mother, she's about to get a surprise that will change her life for ever . . .

Luck Be A Lady

When 14-year-old Rebecca's parents die of smallpox she and her brother and sister must leave their smart home in Kent for the more poverty-stricken conditions in London's East End. After initial trauma, they adapt to poorer living conditions and grow to love the area. Five years on, aged 19, Rebecca meets Jimmy Jackson, born in Bow and now a successful bookmaker. They are attracted, but when their relationship grows to love, an old flame of Jimmy's turns up, producing a son he didn't know he had. Young James and Jimmy get on well, his old flame decides to take herself off to enjoy her life without them, and Rebecca and Jimmy's relationship takes off again.

Bow Belles

Young Kate Browning was beginning to find the strain almost to hard to bear. With her mother Florrie missing, and her spineless father no use at all, it fell to Kate to look after the family. But life in East London at the end of the nineteenth century had never been easy, and with her cruel half-brother Alex becomingmore and more difficult, she despaired of ever seeing her beloved mother again. But her fortunes change when one day, searching for Florrie around the docks, she meets a friendly face in the form of John Kelly, a cheeky Irishman who rescues her from a tricky situation. Together with his grandparents, John reminds her what happiness is like - and she soon dreams of happiness with him. The dark shadow of Alex hangs over her still, however, and when he learns of her new friendship his cruelty slides into madness. Harbouring unnatural desires for his beautiful half-sister, he will never allow the Irishman to take her away - but Kate has inherited her mother's spirit as well as her looks, and vows to forge her own way: discovering what became of Florrie, and giving herself a deserved chance for
Fur Coat, No Knickers

Set between the years 1938-48, this is the story of three generations of women living in the same house during the war years. Aggie, the grandmother, is a strong matriarchal figure, who keeps the family together - until her age begins to get to her and Grace, the main central character, starts to look after her. Hetty, the mother, is happily married to Sam but they are tragically killed when a bomb hits the cinema they are in. Grace, Vi and Polly are the daughters whose lives are particularly affected by the outbreak of war and we see how they cope with air raid sirens, rationing, war work - and love.
