Description

Antique Latin Books ~ (1684) ~ Cicero's Letters to Atticus

A complete set (two volumes) of 17th century leather-bound books: Epistolarum (Cicero's Letters to Atticus). Published in London (1684) on chain-lined paper, during the reign of Charles II. A handsome set of antiquarian English books, which dates from the Stuart Period - guaranteed to bring character and atmosphere to any home library. The original leather boards feature crude pokerwork detail; the books include armorial bookplates, woodcut decoration to title pages, and a beautifully engraved frontispiece. Professionally re-bound. 330 years old.

Incredibly rare, and historically important, antiquarian books: Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 BC - 43 BC) was a Roman statesman, lawyer, scholar, and writer. He is remembered in modern times as the greatest Roman orator and innovator of what became known as Ciceronian rhetoric. Titus Pomponius Atticus (110 BC - 32 BC) was a wealthy but nonpolitical Roman, famous for his correspondence with Cicero.

Provenance: Dealer acquisition from UK auction house.

Measurements: Each book measures 21 x 14 x 6cm.

Condition: Contents are fully complete, and generally good and clean throughout (some light age & trivial discolouration). At some point the books have been professionally re-bound, incorporating the original leather boards with later spines; this has helped to strengthen and preserve the books for future enjoyment. 330 years old.
