This is an important signed portrait miniature of NAPOLEON by EDWARD BIRD Royal Academy he was born in Wolverhampton 1772 - 1819 and became Court Painter to Princess Charlotte who was daughter to King George IV.
The portrait is of course NAPOLEON and is on a domed - curved bit of enamel ....with E.B. signature intials behind his bust.
Looking on the back of the simple wood frame you see its got an old bit of paper ..Napoleon by E. Bird R.A. 1798 Enamel. ...there is some more wording in pencil which I cannot read ...this has then got some old cellotape which is loose and 2 nails holding it all in place.
I have been into the back....it was all pretty loose anyway ..and some of you like to KNOW what is in the backs anyway ... so please see the other photographs of the inside...... he will NEED re-gluing to the backing bit of wood as this is loose.. as well as the stiff card mount.. you can see its had Napoleon written on here in pencil too but has been pulled off the top surface when the back has been looked into by someone else in its life time.
When it is all complete in the frame it is quite difficult to photograph through the glass and with it being on a curved bit of copper it does not come out as well as it does when you are holding it in the flesh.
The brass supension loop is a bit bent...the frame is fairly basic and could do with replacing but of course it has the old lable on the back stuck in position.... the front has glass over the port mini.. which as I said before is a domed bit of enamel ...and has a deep stiff board mount around it.. this is about 5-6mm deep bevelled edge. ..the glass is flat type not curved as you find on some port mini,s. ...the glass is old too with inclusions of grit or whatever old glass has in it.. its NOT like modern glass.
The frame is 7 and half inch wide x 8 and a quarter inch long x 1 inch deep... the glass is 3inch wide x 3 and 3/4 inch .. and the port mini is 1 and 3/4 inch wide x nearly 3 inch long ...it has just SLIPPED out of central position as you can see down past the curved enamel at the right hand side.
Now then .... you will find many web sites related to Edward Bird and please compare the signatures of his and the way he does the B of Bird ...various ways at differant times.....ALSO .. see one of his most famous paintings... Arrival of Louis XVIII at Calais .... it says that Bird travelled with them painting many main figures during the journey....some of Edward Bird's work sells for a small fortune at live auctions.
