Up for auction is this stunning antique wedding dress. It dates back to approximately the late 1800s, early 1900s. The person from who I purchased it believed it dated to the 1860s, due to some pictures found with it, although the length of the dress may better indicate an Edwardian-era dress rather than a Victorian one. Either way, it's absolutely gorgeous and in very good condition for its age. Please scroll down for additional photos.
This is an ivory lace and mesh fitted dress with an elaborte gold glass bead motif on the boidce. There are matching beads on the sleeves. The lace has a floral design and ruffles at the bodice. The bodice unsnaps at the left shoulder and sits over the bodice like a bib both in the front and back--this makes it easier to take on and off. Fitted waist with a partially hidden watercolor silk sash. Closes with a series of snaps and hook & eye closures at the waist. The underslip is silk and snaps below the waist. The skirt's hem has an elaborate eyelet lace design. The overall body of the dress is a fine mesh. Three-quarter sleeves.
Measurements are as follows (all measurements taken with the garment lying flat, please double where necessary):
- Length: 48 inches
- Bust: 17 inches, measured across armpit-to-armpit with the garment lying flat
- Waist: 12 inches, measured across with the garment lying flat
- Hips: 13 inches, measured across with the garment lying flat
- Sleeves: 15 inches
The dress probably has some room for letting out but I would only trust it with a very experienced seamstress. Please note the dress does have some age-related issues. Overall the fabric is fairly sturdy but as with any antique item it is fragile due to it age and should be handled with care.
The lace is in generally good condition although there is a hole at the back neckline (see photo) and also a few small, very light spots on the skirt. The biggest issue that I can see is the yellowing of the lace at the shoulders and armpits. I believe an experienced launderer should have methods for treating this. There is also one snap missing from the skirt --at least as far as I can tell. The silk sash is also separating from the dress a bit--an easy quick stitch fix. The silk underdress is in generally very good condition with no holes. There are some small pinholes in the mesh but nothing very noticeable at all. The beaded sequins are glass and in excellent condition with no noticeably missing ones either on the bodice or the sleeves.

With a little TLC it's in good enough condition to wear and it's definitely a beautiful display piece.
