19th Century Japanese Black Lacquer Photo Album
Stamped O. S. Dwier / San Francisco August 14, 1918
This lovely 19th century black lacquer Japanese postcard / photo album has 9 double-sided pages
to hold photos/post cards and the capability to hold 72 photos in all.
(There are no photographs in it).
The album measures 14 inches by 10 3/4 inches by 2 inches.
The cover and back are both black lacquered wood
and the spine is made of brown leather with 13 gold horizontal bands.
The cover scene shows a woman being pulled along a bridge on a rickshaw,
with Mt. Fuji centered in the background, with gold trees in the foreground and background.
The faces are made of painted bone inserts.
Each page is backed onto a piece of decorated cardboard for strength
and hand-painted with either flowers or scenes from Japan.
Each page has 4 places to display photos/post cards,
with red thread in each corner with which to secure them.
The album is completely intact, with all the pages securely attached.
There is a little bit of separation of the leather cloth from the spine,
on the front side of the album - 4 in. from the top and 2 in. from the bottom.
On the inside of the back cover is a round ink stamp in the upper right hand corner
that reads Aug. 14, 1918 San Francisco, Calif. O. S. Dwier.
There is a tiny chip of lacquer loss on the cover, just below Mount Fuji,
where there is a mild scuff mark.
There are several chips around the edges of the album.
(See photos for more detail)
All of the pages have foxing/staining, but nothing that detracts from its beauty.
