Engraved by Jacobus Houbraken, c.1740, after a painting by Sir Godfrey Kneller. An authentic Georgian line engraving, which depicts Sidney Godolphin, 1st Earl of Godolphin (1645-1712) - a leading English politician and Lord High Treasurer. As a statesman and financier, Godolphin's expertise and loyalty were crucial to the Duke of Marlborough's success in the war against France. A cautious, capable and flexible man, according to Charles II he was 'never in the way and never out of the way'.
