Edwardian Rose

Child (2 to 3 yrs)

Pattern #1912-C-002

Antique Pattern for Authentic 1912 Titanic Era Little Girl's Fancy Lingerie Dress

Another Heirloom Sewing Treasure from The Fashion Archaeologist!

This sewing pattern (our #1912-C-002) is for a beautiful little girl's dress, developed from an original design published in an Edwardian French fashion magazine in April, 1912.  Another of our line of exclusive 'Edwardian Rose' patterns.

This charming dress is designed with rows of insertion lace, tucks, and finished with a fancy satin ribbon sash.  As shown in the antique sketch, it can be made with "Broderie Anglaise" insertion (eyelet insertion) and similar lace trim, or as shown in our photos, with a combination of eyelet and Valenciennes types of lace.  Either way, it's so pretty!

Sewing Skill Level:  This pattern is suitable for a moderately experienced sewer, but if you have done only a little bit of heirloom sewing and would like to try a somewhat more challenging design, give it a try!  This really is quite an outstanding example of an Edwardian little girl's  "lingerie" dress, and the time spent in constructing it will be well rewarded with a beautiful result.  We're always amazed at how gorgeous these little dresses are when they're made up for the first time from a 100-year old pattern.  See the photos for an example of what this pattern looks like when sewn [this listing is for the sewing pattern only.  The garment itself is not included in this auction].

Like all our patterns, this is printed on sturdy 20lb paper to last for years.  It includes detailed cutting and sewing instructions in English, with measurements in both inches and centimetres, a chart/list of included pattern pieces, suggested fabric and notions list, and a copy of the original French fashion sketch.

In addition, this pattern comes in a reusable plastic storage envelope that we know sewing enthusiasts will appreciate!

We take these patterns from the "bare bones" original antique patterns or sketches (usually from French sources), re-draw, correct, and clarify the outlines, assemble the various pattern pieces together onto one sheet, add markings useful to modern sewers, then write complete, step-by-step instructions in English.   To see what sets our antique patterns apart, click on our eBay store icon - The Fashion Archaeologist home page - and follow the link in the lower left navigation bar to our "Store Pages".

If you have ever tried to sew from an original antique pattern, you will know that they can be a challenge at best and mystifying at worst, especially the 'instructions', which are often no more than a few lines of text.  The reason for this was that it was assumed most patterns offered in Edwardian publications would be made up by dressmakers with experience in the pattern drafting and construction techniques of the era.  We've taken the hard work out of interpreting these fashions to make them accessible to modern sewers.

The only thing that is not included is a pattern layout sketch.  This is because fabric widths can vary considerably, giving many possible layouts for one pattern -- these would be very time-consuming to anticipate and draw out, and would unnecessarily increase the cost of developing these patterns.   We therefore suggest a test layout in all our patterns, based on the width of your chosen fabric.  Otherwise, all the information you will need to complete the garment is included.

If you love heirloom sewing and want an authentic, wearable little girl's dress for a special event or perhaps a flower-girl's dress for an Edwardian-style wedding, this pattern is ideal!  If you are a professional or amateur costume maker, this pattern would be excellent for theatrical or historical use.  It would also make a thoughtful and unique gift just as it is for an heirloom sewing enthusiast.

This dress would probably be suitable for a 2 to 3 year old, but please carefully check the finished measurements below to be certain (these are the maximum measurements for optimum fit and comfort, although the pattern can be adjusted up or down a size or two if you have basic alteration skills).

Chest (maximum):  24 inches (61 cm)

Waist (slightly dropped waistline) Maximum:  19 inches (48 cm)

Hip (maximum): 26 inches (66 cm)

Length from back neck to lower hem: 22-1/2 inches (57 cm)

Width across back (roughly shoulder-to-shoulder point): 22 inches (56 cm)

Measurement around sleeve (at upper arm): 8 inches (20 cm)

A wonderful piece of Edwardian fashion history to sew for a little girl's special occasion!
