‘The Silver Chest'

A Beautiful George III Silver Pedestal Creamer

London 1774, made by Nathaniel Appleton & Ann Smith

Weight: 2.5 ozs. / 76 grms.

Length: 9 cms. / 3.6 ins.

Diameter: 6.5 cms. / 2.6 ins.

Height: 11 cms. / 4.3 ins.

Here is a most unusual sparrow beaked pedestal creamer. Georgian creamers made about this time came mainly in two styles – the baluster shape sitting on three legs and the pedestal type such as this one.  It is of ogee form with a scalloped rim, (remarkably with no tears or repairs to it), and a delicate handle topped by the ubiquitous acanthus leaf.  The body has been surrounded by swags and bows with a most unusual inscription engraved in the cartouche at the front. The lower  half of the bowl has been decorated simply and around the pedestal a circular band has been chaste and cut into a tiny delicate design.   The inscription reads:

J.H.Gilbert

Yellow and White Doe

Length of Ears 22 ¼”

Width of Ears 5 ¼”

Weight 8 ½ lbs.

Age 5 m. 17d.

I just could not bring myself to remove that! Mr. Gilbert must have been so proud of his prize rabbit, and it must have been a whopper to have merited such a magnificent trophy. I have no idea whether this was contemporary to the piece – not far off, judging by the type and character of the lettering.  Be that as it may this is a most unusual creamer and every time I see it, it brings a smile to my face. It is in superb condition with clear and distinct hallmarks and come from the very prestigious mixed partnership of Nathaniel Appleton & Ann Smith.   I absolutely love it!
