Item specifics

Manufacturer/ Type:

Staffordshire Figure

Product Type:

You are invited to bid on this lovely antique Staffordshire flatback figure, dating to approximately the 1850s/60s. It depicts the Baptist preacher Charles Haddon Spurgeon. He is shown in his pulpi if mid flow. The pulpit is quite ornate with scrolls and curlicues down the sides and a tented canopy over the top. The pulpit is highlighted in gold, and at the bottom Spurgeon's name is shown in relief, again highlighted in gold. Spurgeon himself is well painted, particularly his face - he has piercing blue eyes, and tiny finely painted eyebrows. He is wearing a black jacket with gold trim, over a white shirt with white cravat. His book of sermons is open on the pulpit in from of him.

This lovely figure stands almost 12" tall. It bears no maker's marks as is common on these early pieces. It is in generally good condition for its age. The main fault is that Spurgeon's raised hand is missing, broken off at the elbow. Otherwise, there are no cracks or chips. There is crazing to the glaze overall, some rubbing to the gold paint in places and a small fault in the glaze to Spurgeon's forehead.

A lovely decorative old piece.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834 – 1892) was a British Particular Baptist preacher, who remains highly influential among Christians of different denominations, among whom he is known as the "Prince of Preachers". He was a strong figure in the Reformed Baptist tradition, defending the Church in agreement with the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith, and opposing the liberal and pragmatic theological tendencies in the Church of his day. In his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to around 10,000,000 people, often up to 10 times each week in different places. Spurgeon was the pastor of the congregation of the New Park Street Chapel in London for 38 years. He was part of several controversies with the Baptist Union of Great Britain and later had to leave the denomination. In 1857 he started a charity organisation  which is now called Spurgeons and works globally. Spurgeon was a prolific author of many types of works including sermons, an autobiography, commentaries, books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, hymns and more. Many sermons were transcribed as he spoke and were translated into many languages during his lifetime. Spurgeon produced powerful sermons of penetrating thought and precise exposition. His oratory skills held throngs of listeners spellbound in the Metropolitan Tabernacle and many Christians have discovered Spurgeon's messages to be among the best in Christian literature.

I will be listing more interesting pieces of antique and vintage pottery and china over the next couple of weeks, so please keep and eye on my other auctions.
