A Sylish Late Victorian Arts and Crafts or Aesthetic Movement Sideboard or Dresser Ca.1875.

This is a most stylish Aesthetic Movement or Arts and Crafts sideboard or dresser dating from around 1875. Designed very much in the Japonesque manner of E. W. Godwin and to an overall design known to have been produced by Collinson and Lock, this mahogany sideboard or dresser is unmarked save for a Furniture Depository label to the rear for Knee Brothers of Clifton and Bristol and a further label giving the name of a client and Weston Supermare.

Design details of note are the Japonesque supports to the superstructure and the assymetrical bands to the doors. Also the handles to the drawers - being almost in the manner of Dr. Christopher Dresser as indeed is the incised geometric decoration to the top rail. The hinges are of note also.  It is worth mentioning that the mirror at the back has rectangular panels, it would appear that there were originally square panels, the intermediate vertical borders having been cut, indeed it is possible that there was not originally a mirror here but embossed or gilded leather squares, (however this is conjecture) The top drawer has a rather strange baize fitment with semi-spherical recesses for something – we do not know what.

We have been unable to make a firm attribution despite our research, if you have any information regarding this design we would be most grateful to hear from you.

It measures 22.8" by 66" with a height of approx 59".

The piece is in its original unrestored condition. The tenon holding the left rail to the upright at the front is damaged and would need to be replaced for secure fitment (it is OK as it is but not good enough if the piece is to be used). There is some separation at the joints and the piece would benefit from clamping back with a little glue – not necessary but would bring it back to 100%, There is a some marking to the  top surface as to be expected and the potboard is also marked.
