Antique Watkins Clinometer in pouch – FC Molesworth – BB/19B

You are looking at or bidding a ‘Watkins Clinometer, Patent 217. J.Hicks Maker, 8 Hatton Garden, London’ and No ‘7466’. The patent was granted in 1884. This type of Clinometer has an internal pendulum and scale which rotate under gravity. When a feature is sighted through the eye hole in the side of the case the angle of inclination or depression can be seen alongside in the reflection from a mirror. Clinometer is still in its original case, this is named F.C.Molesworth and dated Jan 27, 1900. This is quite interesting too as there was a Colonel Francis Crofton Molesworth who was born on 26 July 1880 at Weymouth, Dorset, England. He was the son of Lt.-Col. Anthony Oliver Molesworth and Anne Elizabeth Smith. He married Eileen Denny, daughter of Lt.-Col. Richard Denny and Mary Guppy, on 4 February 1913.1 He died on 27 June 1955 at age 74. He also wrote a book in 1924 entitled The Miltary uses of Astronomy. Thsi would definitely be the type of scientific instrument Colonel Molesworth may have owned and used.

He gained the rank of Colonel in the service of the Royal Engineers.1 He was Colonel RE, WW I, South Persia and Afghan War 1919 (despatches), FRGS, FRAS in 1918.

I have tried to push the little button on the side and parts start moving, so I take it is it still working. If you wish for me to test or do anything with it then feel free to drop me an email.

Still in very nice condition considering age. It does have some wear to black coating exposing brass underneath, this is just from age / use. Leather pouch has some wear to it as well and scuffing. Strap has light age cracking.

See all photos.

Measures approx 2 ¾" in diameter.
