For auction an antique treadle woodturning and metal turning lathe by "Pfeil of London". Made between 1895 and 1900 in London by this famous old Victorian company. In absolutely excellent condition, total cast iron construction, unlike a lot of models of the same era with wooden beds and end frames. this beautifully made old lathe shouts Victorian quality throughout. There is no play in either the headstock or tailstock, the metal turning cross-slide is of massive weight, and has absolutely no play in either the transverse or linear planes. As can be seen from the photographs the bed of the lathe is of the flat to the front, and the vee to the rear, Whether you are a collector or a practising woodturner/metalturner this lathe will be a delight to own and use. I have only ever used it to hand chase threads. It is a delight to use, the flywheel, treadle arrangement is perfectly balanced, the quality of the fly wheel together with its mass and the pulley arrangement means that the minimum physical effort is required in the operation of the lathe. This lathe was owned from new by the family of the Dean of Salisbury, and consequently by the Dean himself, the Very Reverend Hugh Dickinson, retired, an extensive article on the Dean and his lathe was published by the local Salisbury Journal. The "Pfeil" company produced these lathes to an extremely high standard even by todays requirements of accuracy, and are spoken of in the same circles as Holtzappfel. Silent, extremely smooth, and very accurate, chasing threads is a joy.
The lathe can be sent to U.K. mainland, I will make a substantial packing case to hold all. The arrangements
for the courier will be the responsibility of the purchaser. Despatch would be around 5 days after purchase
to allow me time to make packing case.
