My old arts & crafts piano. Made by Moore and Moore (who wre bought by Kemble in the 1930s).
This is a very stylish arts & crafts piano, with 4 lovely copper straps on the keyboard lid. removable candle sconces, which need restoring also (see breaks where they have been glued).
I am describing this piano as needing restoration, mainly because it has been in storage for the past 3 years, and so will need tuning and some maintenance. As I was taking the photos I tried the keyboard and about 4 of the keys stick; I perservered and eventually they all played OK, but I think it needs looking at. I don't think the pedals seem to do much. Surprisingly not too badly out of tune despite it last having been done some 5 years ago.
The ivory/bone keys seem to be intact but with some discolouration. There is some old woodworm holes in the sides which I had treated at the time we purchased the piano so they are old not active. They are not very noticeable and could easily be filled in or waxed over. The back has a cloth covering which is torn and frayed in places. The overall finish of the piano is tired and worn - depends how far you want to go to restore really - the finish is really ony a cosmetic thing and to be fair, everyone that has seen this piano is impressed by how stylish it looks - it is completely different to your run of the mill Victorian piano. I am unsure of the timber used, but the colour is mahogany - ish.
I envisage this will be of interest to someone who already has an arts & crafts furnished interior and would maybe like to complete the look with an affordable arts and crafts piano that looks the part, rather than as a serious instrument to be played on. We bought it for the look as we used to have an arts and crafts house, and because our daughter showed an interest in piano initially which soon evaporated, so it became a large ornament. There is a stool with it, but it is not in the same style as the piano; in fact it is nothing special; I do have a photo of it but ebay only lets you upload 12 photos so I didn't put it on as I thought the piano was more important.
In style it is very reminiscent of the pianos designed by Walter Cave for Bechstein.
Please note I do not know anything about pianos, so you have to make your own mind up about this. This is why I recommend you come and take a look before bidding, but I don't have time for speculative tyre-kickers. It is what it is, you either will love it and buy it for all it's faults, or you will know what you are doing an buy it to restore and sell on.
Arts and Crafts pianos just do not seem to come along that often, so do your homework and decide if it is for you.
This piano has an IRON FRAME. As such it is extremely heavy. It nearly killed me and my friend getting it out of storage and into my mum and dad's garage where it now resides. I am willing to help load but unless you have one of those drop down hydraulic platforms on the van I would say this will need 2 men plus me to help load. The van can just back up to the garage door.
I prefer cash on collection. I have to list paypal as an option, but I don't want any returns. I am selling this as is with all faults - you are not buying a pristine item - you will need to work on this. I just need it out of the way, so buyer muct collect promptly ! Piano dealers are welcome if you think this is something you can turn a profit on.
The only other Moore and Moore arts & crafts piano I can find on the net is a good one for sale at just shy of 5k.
I am starting this at £40.
Piano can be viewed in Acle, between Norwich and Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. I will provide full address details for anyone that wants to come and view.
