RISSA TRIDACTYLA

Common name; BLACK LEGGED KITTIWAKE

An original hand coloured lithograph by Henry Richter after John Gould, published by Gould in "Birds of Great Britain",  published London between 1862 and 1873.

A fine example of Gould's wonderful bird illustrations, which have become icons of the genre, sought after by collectors worldwide.  Always in demand and a sound investment.

Title and artist's credits ( J.Gould & H.C.Richter del et lith) appear below the image.

Fine condition. The superb original hand colouring remains bright and fresh.

Approx. 21.5" x 14.5" (550mm x 370mm) overall. Please scroll right down for close up image.

John Gould (1804- 1881), was a noted English ornithologist who worked extensively with leading naturalists of the day including Charles Darwin. His work on the Galapagos finches was a central contribution to Darwin's "Origin of Species". Gould travelled the world with his wife Elizabeth observing and illustrating the native bird species. Elizabeth lithographed  the illustrations until her death in 1841 after which several other talented artists, including Edward Lear, William Hart, Henry Richter and Josef Wolf carried on the work under Gould's close supervision of the entire process. The quality of the artwork is of the highest standard and the vibrant and luminous yet accurate colouring creates a highly decorative image for display.
