isnw_ecp HI FOLKS I DO REALISE HOW DIFFICULT IT IS TO CHOOSE AN INSTRUMENT WITHOUT FIRST SEEING IT OR PLAYING IT AND I KNOW THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ABOUT AN INSTRUMENT IS FOR IT TO BE SET UP TO PLAY PROPERLY . THAT IS WHY I HAVE INCLUDED A VIDEO AND SOUND CLIP WHICH I HOPE WILL GIVE YOU A COMPLETE PICTURE OF THIS LOVELY INSTRUMENT.. PLEASE SCROLL TO THE END OF THIS DESCRIPTION TO VIEW THE VIDEO . I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT THIS INSTRUMENT WILL GIVE YOU YEARS OF PLEASURE AS WHAT I HAVE FOR YOU IS BEAUTIFUL OLD BANJO UKULELE MADE BY THE RESPECTED FIRM OF JOHN GREY AND SONS OF LONDON. The man responsible for the design and manufacture of the first John Grey banjos was Francis Beddard, . an Englishman who had gone to Anierica in the late 1890's to work in the S.S. Stewart factory in Philadelphia. When Stewart failed in 1901 Beddard returned to England and soon after secured a job in the factory of Barnett Samuel & Sons Ltd. It was his craftsmanship and flair for knowing how to sell the banjos he made which put John Grey instruments "on the map." (His son Robert--an expert banjoist and banjo maker himself- has been on the staff of Rose, Morris & Co. Ltd. for many years as production manager.) THE HEADSTOCK FEATURES THE JOHN GREY AND SONS OF LONDON BADGE AND ON THE BACK FEATURES A MADE IN ENGLAND STICKER BUT ALSO THE LETTERS R.M WHICH STAND FOR ROSE MORRIS. IT MEASURES 23.5 INS BY 8.5 INS AND THE DIAMETER OF THE RESONATOR IS 10 INS I HAVE IT TUNED TO STANDARD UKE TUNING G C A E BUT I WILL PROVDE THE WINNING BIDDER WITH ALTERNATIVE TUNINGS AS USED BY GEORGE FORMBY AND SOME OF THE OLD TIME PLAYERS. PLEASE LISTEN TO THE AUDIO PLAYER TO HEAR THE SOUND OF THIS UKE. IT HAS A LOVELY "OLD FASHIONED " TONE UNLIKE THE RAUCOUS SOUND OF THE MODERN ONES BUT PLEASE COME TO YOUR OWN CONCLUSIONS . .THE VELLUM/SKIN IS HELD ON BY 8 ADJUSTABLE CHROME TENSIONERS .. THE FINGERBOARD HAS 3 MOTHER OF PEARL FRET MARKERS IT HAS A FLANGED BACK/RESONATOR HELD ON BY 2 EASILY REMOVEABLE CHROME SCREWS. I COMPLETELY DISASSEMBLED THIS INSTRUMENT AND GAVE IT THE "JASPERHAPPY" TREATMENT IN MY BANJO UKULELE WORKSHOP. HAS A NICE TAIL PIECE THAT PREVENTS THE KNOT ENDS CHAFFING YOUR ARM WHEN YOU STRUM. CHECKED OUT THE FINGERBOARD AND FRETS TO MAKE SURE THERE IS NO BUZZING OR STRANGE NOISES . ALSO THERE IS NO WEAR ON THE FINGERBOARD ESPECIALLY THE IMPORTANT 1ST 4 FRETS FITTED A NEW EBONY TOPPED BRIDGE BUT WILL ALSO SUPPLY A 2ND BRIDGE OF A DIFFERENT HEIGHT SO YOU CAN CHANGE THE ACTION TO YOUR CHOICE I HAVE FITTED A NEW SET OF MY OWN BRAND OF COLOURED STRINGS (SEE MY OTHER ITEMS). THIS INSTRUMENT ALSO COMES WITH A STRAP WHICH IS USEFUL AND IS EASILY ATTACHED OR REMOVED... AND TO ALL YOU GEORGE FORMBY STRUMMERS I HAVE SET THIS UP (CORRECTED THE NECK ANGLE) WITH A NICE ACTION MAKING IT EASIER TO PERFORM THOSE FORMBY STRUMMING STROKES ( also enclosed some easy to follow strumming sheets allowing you to master many different strumming styles). COSMETICALLY THIS INSTRUMENT IS IN LOVELY CONDITION WITH THE CHROME WORK IN PRISTINE CONDITION. I DO LIKE THE DECO STYLE CHROME CUT OUTS WHICH ARE ATTACHED TO THE TENSIONERS. THE WOODEN PARTS HAVE THE ODD MARKS HERE AND THERE BUT HARDLY NOTICEABLE. THE VARNISH ON THE RESONATOR SHOWS SIGNS OF CRACKLING WHICH IS COMMON TO OLD INSTRUMENTS BUT I DONT MIND THIS AT ALL AND IT IS A FEATURE OF QUITE A FEW OF MY VINTAGE INSTRUMENTS. BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS HOW IT PLAYS AND SOUNDS AND TO BE HONEST IF I DID NOT OPEN A SIMILAR MODEL I WOULD NOT BE SELLING THIS. THE BANJO UKE COMES IN ITS ORIGINAL CASE WHICH IS ALSO IN REMARKABLE CONDITION. IT WILL COME WITH A DOUBLE SPARE SET OF MY OWN BRAND STRINGS (SEE OTHER ITEMS FOR SALE) FELT PLECTRUM A SELECTION OF ILLUSTRATED STRUMMING STROKES A SELECTION OF SONGS TRANSCRIBED FOR THE UKE AND GLEAMED FROM THE WEB THIS INSTRUMENT WILL BE EXPERTLY PACKAGED BY THE AMAZING MRS HAPPY AND POSTED AS SOON AS PAYMENT IS RECEIVED..
