Please note - due to the value of this comic, this is a UK only auction.
We are delighted to offer for the very first time an original first issue of The Beano comic. Published on 30th July 1938, this is probably the most sought after British comic. Hundreds of other British comic titles have been published since but, very sadly, none have stood the test of time like the Beano which is still published today.
The comic was an instant success following on eight months after the launch of The Dandy comic. The Dandy comic was doing very well and was surpassing the distribution figures of the well established boys papers from DC Thomson - the Big Five - Adventure, Hotspur, Rover, Skipper and Wizard.
The first Beano comic treated readers to 28 pages with a full colour front cover with Reg Carter's Big Eggo, comic strips inside from DC Thomson's then-secret weapon Dudley Watkins in the form of Lord Snooty and his Pals, prose stories such as The Ape's Secret, text and prose stories such as Morgyn the Mighty and a joke and riddles page, which also promoted the second issue with free sugar button sweets - always a winner! Plus of course the first issue came with a free gift - a 'Whoopee Mask' which, unfortunately, is not present here (only one of these is known to have survived).
The first issue of The Beano comic sold an incredible 442,963 copies so was an instant success. It is hard to imagine that from this colossal figure, less than 25 examples are now known to exist. So this is a genuinely rare example of a landmark British comic.
This is only the third unique example of the first Beano comic that we have seen offered on eBay since we joined in the year 2000.
This comic is graded as 'Good' with a 3 inch tear to the top margin which includes a 1 inch oval piece missing from the 'E' of the 'BEANO' title logo. There is a 2 inch tear to page 3. The cover colours are bright but the pages are tanned with some darker staining to margins. Importantly the spine is strong which gives the comic a sturdy feel. Two creases to the rear cover corner and a few other small closed edge tears and odd nicks.
A Good example of a genuine 20th Century British icon!
