Beet Leaf - Perpetual Spinach - 600 Seeds

Beet Leaf "Perpetual Spinach"

If your summer spinach is always running to seed before you manage to get a worthwhile crop off it, then Spinach Perpetual is the variety for you because it virtually never runs to seed in its first season, therefore very good on dry ground. Spinach Perpetual is succulent, prolific and very hardy, suitable for autumn and winter crops too.

Sowing Instructions

Site & Soil

You can grow Beet Leaf in most parts of the garden as long as it is not in deep shade. The grow well in full sun but will probably do best if they are shaded in summer during the hottest part of the day. Neither is beet leaf choosy about the soil conditions. They require a good draining soil but that's their only key requirement soil-wise. If the soil is reasonably rich in nutrients then so much the better. The thinnings can be trimmed of their roots and cooked. Water freely through the season and harvest by picking a few leaves, snapping them off close to the ground, from several plants rather than completely stripping one. If there are more leaves ready than you can use it is still best to pick them to encourage a steady supply of young green leaves.

When to Sow

Sow mid March-July, or under glass in January-February to crop May onwards. Germinates between 8 and 30°C.

How to Sow

Sow the seed thinly (5cm / 2in apart) at a depth of 1cm (½in). If growing more than one row, space the rows about 38cm (15in) apart. When the seedlings emerge thin them out at first to 15cm /6in. A week or two later thin the seedlings again to 30cm / 12in apart. Water them well.

Germination is affected by such factors as temperature, moisture content, light intensity and contamination of planting media. Although we do everything possible to get seeds to you in the best possible condition far exceeding legal requirements and will provide as much help as possible, these factors are totally outside of our control and once you receive the seeds its over to you. Consequently, we can take no responsibility for the suitability to your local conditions of any variety offered, the indicative cultivation advice provided or ultimately the varieties performance. As such you should seek local advice to carefully ensure your local conditions and the time of season are appropriate to the variety purchased.
