Beautiful cylindrical roots of excellent flavour – 7-10cm long

Resistant to bolting – smooth texture – can sit in the ground without getting woody

Good choice where space is at a premium

Uniform sized roots make them excellent for pickling in slices and roasting

 

 

Cultivation
Beetroot seed can sown in succession throughout the growing season starting with some sown early under cover if frosts are a problem in your area. They like a sunny spot without excessive heat and will tolerate most soils although ideally the soil should be light and sandy
Sowing and Care
Firstly soak the seed in warm water for a few hours or overnight as this will speed up germination. Expect them to take up to a couple of weeks to germinate. Most beetroot seeds consist of a little fruit like cluster of 2-3 seeds and therefore and will require thinning out once they have germinated and have formed a couple of ‘true leaves’- be careful not to disturb the roots too much and you can use these thinnings to make additional rows of beetroots.
Sow 25mm (1in) deep and water in well and keep the soil moist.
Space the plants anything from 5cm (2in) and 10cm (4in) apart depending on the size of beetroot you wish to grow. The rows can be between 15cm (6in) and 30cm (12in) apart.
Keep the plants weed free and well watered especially when the roots start to swell. Water regularly as inadequate sporadic watering can cause the roots to become cracked.
Harvesting
Start harvesting when the beets are about the size of a golf ball, taking a selection from along a row leaving the ones in between to grow on. Removing the tops by twisting off the top by hand rather than cutting will prevent the plants from ‘bleeding’. Cook and eat the tops too!
The roots (minus the leaves) can also be stored in boxes of sand or peat over the winter
