I bought this product as a inexpensive back up to Sat Nav on my iPhone and initially I was very pleased. The use of full post code entry was a big improvement on my last SatNav (bought 4 years ago but with only partial post code search). The Binatone display was very clear and easy to follow and I was particularly impressed at roundabouts by the uncluttered graphics. I thought I was onto a winner but gradually problems started to emerge as I used the unit more and more. Firstly battery life turned out to be very poor, lasting less than an hour. Charging it up took anywhere between 5 and 12 hours, so when using it in the car I had to have it permanently plugged in to the 12V output cigarette lighter. This meant wires trailing all over the place which looked messy. Using it on my bicycle was out of the question on account of poor battery performance. I also noted that the screen holder looked very flimsy and due to it's design did not sit where I wanted it to go in my car. The more I used the GPS the more it became apparent that the directions (particularly verbal) were bizarre and odd. I was freqently told to turn left when it should have been right (as was shown on the screen display) or right when it should be left. At first this was merely amusing but was not funny when I was heading to Dundee and had to come off the A90 due to an accident closing the road. I was now totally depended on the unit getting me round the diversion. Like all SatNavs it tried to get me back to the road I had just been forced to come off. This was to be expected, but when I started to ridiculous directions including turning into a farm track or into someones long driveways I no longer saw anything funny about it. Eventually I had to turn the unit off because it was no use, and follow other traffic hoping they were going where I wanted. However the most serious failing was the unit completely packing up after only 36 days use. No amount of resetting would get the thing to start up. The Binatone is very inexpensive and it looks nice and has many nice qualities (like speed camera alerts, but many were inaccurate like the alert showing a 70 limit in a 40 zone). However when it really mattered the Binatone failed big time and I therefore could not recommend as no matter how inexpensive it has a job to do and in my experience the Binatone fails to do this by a considerable margin.Read full review
Would I recommend this to friend? NO - I would not wish it on my worst enemy. A great display and good looks belies the most useless unfit for purpose gadget I have ever bought. The mapping software was totally random in ignoring destinations and it would not even recognise the city of Hull in that form or it's Sunday name of Kingston Upon Hull. The city simply did not exist. Inputting a destination in Hessle under a correct Post Code took me to Cottingham, almost ten miles away. By now rather amused with this slick but useless piece of technology, I later thought I'd see what it wanted me to do when I entered the destination of a pub restaurant some 5 miles from home. On a main road where it should have told me to turn right, it of course said left! Had I followed the unit, the only possible route, due to bridge crossings and rivers, would have been a 50 mile journey instead of a 5 mile one. I don't know how the software in this unit could be so randomly useless, there was absolutely no logic to the device.Read full review
Got it to South Africa and it keeps telling me ‘maps are not connected’. Maybe something I’m doing. Don’t know.
