When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality.

The story of a woman driven by her desire to succeed in the role to die for
I missed this film at the cinema but was intrigued by all the hype.It addresses the nature of obsession and the quest for perfection resulting in the ultimate sacrifice! I don't want to go into too much detail and spoil it for any-one,suffice it to say,watch this if you like stimulating your grey matter!...Highly recommended also as a 'fly on the wall' insight into the dedication it takes to be a ballerina.

A wonderful take on Swan Lake - showing the dark side of a performance
Really good film, specially if you are familiar with Swan Lake, but rather sad. This is a about a ballerina who hates her mother's control and wants so much to succeed in the role of Odete/Odile. Throughout rehersals we see her affected with mental illness, and although her performance is briliant (specially as Odile)) the end is as tragic as the story. Beautifully acted, directed and filmed, wonderful incidental music based on Tchaikovsky's original score and VERY emotional - so if you're like me, get the tissues ready - you'l need them.
