Author/Editor.  Ian Skennerton

Publisher.  Greenhill Books

Publishing Date.  1993

Edition.  1st thus

Hard Cover/Soft Cover.  Hard with d/j

Condition.  Book in good condition with expected wear for age.  Discolouring throughout, most noticeably to page block and in page margins, edges of boards also discoloured/faded and some light creasing here & there – previous owner’s rubber ink stamp address opposite title page and previous rubbed out pencil price still visible in top corner of first page (otherwise pages and text clean).  Thickness/weight of book contributing to binding being just a little loose.  D/j also in good condition but now worn/rubbed, lightly creased throughout and with some scuffing to edges/corners (heavier on back bottom edge) – spine faded.

Description of Contents.  A ready reference, a detailed history and an illustrated inventory; the Lee-Enfield Story is all of these.  The lineage through trials rifles, Magazine Lee-Metford and Lee-Enfield, Short Rifle, No. 4 Series and .22RF trainers is thoroughly and meticulously described.  In more than ten years since the “British Service Lee” was published, new information and a complete revision has resulted in this new work, considered to be the definitive tome on the Lee-Enfield Rifle and its development.  New features are - illustrated parts catalogues of the Magazine Lee-Enfield, S.M.L.E. and No. 4 rifles; extra illustrations, including parts and specific items; more recent information from museums and collections in Great Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Europe and the United States; enlarged chapters on the Australian, North American and Indian production; additional listings of manufacture, inspection and issue markings; expanded index; more details on service accessories and armourers tools; rifle serial number lists; better production and printing on imported art paper, enabling enhanced resolution for the illustrations.  The M.O.D. Pattern Room, Nottingham (formerly the Enfield R.S.A.F. collection) has contributed further by making available recently discovered War Office files and manuals.  Their extensive collection of British service Lee rifles and carbines was utilised extensively for examination and the photography.  Many of the new illustrations in the Lee-Enfield Story are Pattern Room examples.  A scarce and highly prized title.
