Ex Collectione Everard Meynell

Signed: EG (reversed)  [for Eric Gill]

Date engraved: 1916

Hand holding a book. Printed on gummed paper.

Everard Meynell (1882-1925) was one of eight children of Wilfrid John Meynell (1852–1948), a Roman Catholic journalist, and his wife, Alice Christiana Gertrude Meynell (1847–1922), poet and the daughter of Thomas James Thompson. Everard’s sister was the writer Viola Mary Meynell (1885–1956), and a younger brother was Sir Francis Meredith Wilfrid Meynell (1891–1975), typographer and publisher, (whose Pegasus bookplate by Eric Gill dates from 1914).  It was a literary family.

From The Times, Saturday, Jan 09, 1926

S. L.” wrItes. —News comes from Genoa of the death of Everard Henry Edward Meynell, son of Wilfrid and Alice Meynell, and godson of Cardinal Manning. Born in 1882. He was an early art-student at the Slade School before joining the staff of the Illustrated London News and other periodicals as a critic of pictures. The “Bellini” volume in “The Great Artists Series” was his; and later he published “Corot, and his Friends.” But his memorable literary achievement was his “Life of Francis Thompson,” which was approved as a masterpiece and has passed through many editions. An oil-portrait from his own capable brush also remains as the most faithful presentment of the poet at the close of his life. His expert knowledge of books, especially the poetry books of the 16th end 17th centuries, brought him into touch with other collectors both at home and in America: hence the Serendipity Shop -  a name coined by Walpole and coming to mean the lucky dip’s serenity for those who light on successes in treasure-finding. The war interrupted this business-pastime; and from the time of his service in the Royal Air Force dated the lung trouble from which, after a long nursing in California ending only last July, he died in Genoa, a city which had been endeared to his mother by many early associations. Everard Meynell married in 1908 Grazia Carbone, of Buffalo. U.S.A., by whom he had four children. His wife was with him in Italy at the end, and so were his brother Francis and his sister Olivia, Mrs Sowerby, and Viola, Mrs. Dallyn. Thus passes away a character which was endeared to the bookmen and book lovers of his generation, for he possessed the faculty of spotting the value of friends and books with that unerring second sight which is given to the pure in heart.
