Always been a quality manufacturer of fishing reels . I have an Abu Cardinal which must be 50 years old and it works perfectly. This type of reel was popular in the 70's but I hadn't seen one for decades. I'm sure it will see me into my coffin and beyond.

I purchased the Abu 507 mk11 closed faced fishing reel with anticipation for the new fishing season. I have used the reel twice and have become increasingly anoid by the line release button. Prior to you casting your line in the water I have to make a few attempts each time for the button on top of the reel to release the line. This happens each time you wish to cast ! Very annoying as you would expect a new real to release the line easily on the first attempt. I would not recommend this reel.

I've used this reel for river work for about a year and had no problems at all - unlike some other reviewers. 4 roach catches over 25lbs without any issues speaks for itself. All closed-face reels are limited in their casting range but make striking and picking up line much easier than open-faced reels. As good as closed-face reels get.

The reel itself was fine straight out of the box, but the moulding of the spools was very poor for such a renowned reel manufacturer. All the spools had large plastic burrs remaining which had to be cut and sanded smooth before use. Once done the reel is ok, but occasionally needs a couple of presses on the button to retract the line pickup pin.

Spools still had large plastic burrs which prevented handle from turning. Once I had removed the burrs it was fine. Also it's a very heavy reel.
