The prose of his travel writing is... economical, descriptive and rarely repetitive, making for a fluid, compulsive and engrossing read. (ENTERTAINMENT FOCUS 2012-10-13)

Palin does his job as a travel writer very well indeed. He knows how to entertain the reader at first, resists any temptation to lecture, then builds up a slow boil of interest before teasing out some answers through some skilful interviewing. The resulting mosaic of opinions draws out a fascinating composite picture of a nation. (Barnaby Rogerson THE INDEPENDENT 2012-11-13)

Michael Palin's Brazil is a good primer, written in the same chatty style as he uses in the television series (THE DAILY TELEGRAPH)

Book Description

Michael Palin, the No. 1 bestselling author, explores an exotic country now a global superpower.

From the Inside Flap

Michael Palin undertakes another of his celebrated journeys, to a vast country of unimaginable contrasts - Brazil. As much of the world is mired in recession Brazil continues to be an economic powerhouse, as well as host to a staggering variety of peoples, from the hugely wealthy to the abjectly poor, from twenty-first century technocrats to Stone-Age tribes who continue to live as their ancestors have for centuries, and with every conceivable shade of skin colour and ethnicity.

Michael starts his journey in the north, in the remote mountains and forests of the Lost World on the border with Venezuela, and finishes in the south at the legendary Iguazu Falls on the border with Argentina. In between he travels by river-boat, float-plane and by foot to visit tribes deep in the jungle. He visits Manaus, the gaudy capital of nineteenth-century rubber barons, and on to the ruins of Fordlandia, Henry Ford's madcap scheme to corner the rubber market by building a replica of the American Midwest deep in the jungle. He samples life in the deeply conservative agricultural and mining heartland of Brazil, experiences the startling modernism of Brasilia, the heady mix of dancing, noise, wall-to-wall urban art, hybrid sexuality, religious fervour, beach life and spectacular setting which characterises Rio. Michael also ventures into the once-feared slums, the favelas; he travels down the north-east coast with its African-inspired culture. To Sao Luis with its hectic carnival atmosphere as it hosts one of the biggest festivals outside Rio, Recife and Salvador, where Michael is swept up in Candomblé, with its myriad saints, chicken and goat sacrifices, dancers, drummers and shamans.
