Postcard reproducing Pauline Baynes artwork
for 1972 poster

A Map of Narnia and the Surrounding Countries

* Signed by Pauline Baynes *

Postcard issued by The Marion E. Wade Center,
Wheaton College, Illinois

Pauline Baynes is best known for illustrating some of the most celebrated fantasies of the 20th century, most notably C.S. Lewis’s Narnia Chronicles, as well as several works by J.R.R. Tolkien, whose favourite artist she was. Her wonderful maps of Narnia and Middle-earth (for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit) are much sought after.

This beautiful postcard reproduces her map of Narnia, painted in 1971 for use as a poster, and including a lovely portrait of Aslan, plus assorted characters and scenes from the Narnia books. The original painting now resides in the Marion E. Wade Collection, Wheaton College, Illinois – the publishers of this card.

The card is signed by Pauline Baynes to the reverse, in ink.
A lovely piece of C.S. Lewis ephemera, exceptionally scarce with the artist’s signature.

Inscription and provenance
This signed card is from my own personal collection. I am selling it to raise funds for the illustrator Danuta Mayer (well known, among others, for her beautiful artwork for the Folio Society’s Yellow Fairy Book). Danuta was a close friend of Pauline Baynes for nearly 30 years; Pauline – a great animal lover – supported Danuta not only in her illustration career but also in her work with rescued animals. A few years before her death, Pauline signed a collection of books and ephemera for Danuta, with the intention that these would be sold to raise funds for Danuta’s small animal sanctuary. Pauline signed several pieces for me at the same time, of which this postcard is one. All proceeds from this sale will go directly to Danuta. I will provide a letter of provenance if desired.
Postcard is in excellent condition.
Approximate size 5.9 x 4.1 inches (15 x 10.5 cm).

Shipping from UK:
All goods are securely packed, with multiple purchases combined where possible. Items are generally mailed within one or two days of receipt of payment. Any customs charges are the responsibility of the buyer.

Shipping costs:
Shipping costs are as per eBays shipping menu, near the head of this listing (click on Postage tab).
For all non-UK countries, secure registered delivery is an extra £5.00, where desired. This is via Royal Mail’s International Signed For service. Signed For is always recommended for high-value items, but usually optional (I do sometimes make exceptions, particularly for countries such as Italy or Poland, where the postal service is known to be unreliable).
Note that my prices include a small sum towards the cost of packaging materials.

I will send an invoice at the end of the auction.
UK buyers: payments are accepted by cheque, postal order, bank transfer or PayPal.
All other buyers, including US: payments are accepted via PayPal. I can also accept cheques in GB pounds sterling drawn on a UK bank account, or bank transfers in certain cases.
I will do my best to accommodate other payment methods, but please email me first to make sure.
