CONSTRUCT A LOW-COST ARM-REST FOR YOUR BANDING WHEEL
MOST ceramics hobbyists at some time or other want to make lamp bases, bowls, vases, pots and pitchers, and other round cylindrical pieces.
While this type of ceramic work usually requires a potter's wheel - a large piece of equipment and a major investment- well formed "wheel thrown" pieces can be made on a bench whirler or 'banding wheel' ( photo above) in less than half an hour. Banding wheels can be purchased or built at home using a generic 'Lazy Suzan' sold at most large hardware stores: ACE hardware, Home Depot, Lowe's, etc.
Except for the banding wheel, most tools neeeded by the ceramist are regular steel-end clay and plaster tools that can be purchased at most ceramics supply stores or by mail. An old spoon with the end sharpened can be used to shape the inside of clay pieces, tools can also be made of any thin, flat metal, such as an old hacksaw blade, or clock spring.
THIS IS NOT A KIT
This package contains 4 black-and-white pages which I have enlarged 125% for clarity and your reading enjoyment showing: How to turn perfectly formed pieces using a banding wheel and a homemade arm rest. ( The plans for this arm rest are an orthographoic drawing with 'curved arrow' callouts,) forming and shaping a clay cylinder, tool movement during shaping, a description of arm placement during the forming process, building a cylinder with coils, shaping a coil-built bowl, shaping a pitcher lip, and suggestions for pitcher handles.
