PAUL H. BARRETT & R. B. FREEMAN

ADVISOR: PETER GAUTREY

29 VOLUMES

LONDON, WILLIAM PICKERING

1986-1989

*******

BOOKS' DESCRIPTION: Darwin, C. R., 1986-1989. The works of Charles Darwin, edited by Paul H. Barrett and R.B. Freeman. London:Pickering, 29 volumes, 11,000pp: 234x156mm, Approx total weight: 24kg/52lbs. Freeman: F1921. See after photographs for detailed list of individual titles.

CONDITION: VERY GOOD A complete set of this remarkable and unparalleled collected works.  No previous ownership marks.  All bindings secure. Some minor marks and scuffing to a few volumes.  Some staining to the top text-block edge of a few volumes (see photos) but otherwise fine.  As well as Darwin's better known works (published by John Murray) this set also includes his geological works (published by Smith Elder), his outlines, from the early 1840s, of his theory on the Origin of Species (published in Cambridge in 1909), the Zoology Of The Beagle (Smith Elder again), Darwin's extensive and groundbreaking work on barnacles (Ray Society & The Palaeontographical Society - Cirripedia monographs) along with items published long after Darwin's death, such as his unexpurgated autobiography and the entire "Beagle Diary", which comprises volume I of this extraordinary set.   There is, at the end of volume 29, a "Consolidated Index" - a remarkable and immensely useful resource - by Richard Raper which indexes the entire set. Raper worked with a team of a dozen others to compile this index.

Please e-mail if you would like me to send further photos to those below.

**********

'Having the whole output of a single author as a complete set arranged in chronological order is a resource of incalculable value...The illustrations are magnificent...the publishers must be congratulated on the high quality of these reproductions.’

            Archives of Natural History

The "Works of Charles Darwin" makes it possible for the fist time to review Darwin's public literary output as a whole. Darwin's works are now presented in their definitive texts, typeset, printed and bound to modern standards. It is important to see Darwin's literary output as a whole to understand fully both his influence on the religious, philosophical and scientific upheavals of the nineteenth century, and the development of the theory of evolution by natural selection which forms a continuous thread running through his work from first to last. Texts have been selected by Professor Barrett and Richard Freeman and where more than one edition of a work exists, the editors have chosen the edition* which reflects Darwin's ideas most fully (usually the final text). [*In the case of The Origin of Species, both the 1st Edition (1859) and the definitive text of the 6th Edition (1876) have been reproduced - volumes 15 & 16 - see photos below]

             The Publisher

Paul H Barrett, formerly Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Michigan State University (Natural Science), was also a primary editor for: The Collected Papers of Charles Darwin (1977); A Concordance to Darwin's Origin of Species (1981) A Concordance to Darwin's Expression of the Emotions (1986) and A Concordance to Darwin's Descent of Man (1987)

Richard Broke Freeman (1915 – 1986) was a zoologist, historian of zoology, bibliographer of natural history and book collector. Known professionally as R. B. Freeman, he compiled comprehensive reference works on Charles Darwin and on P. H. Gosse.  Much less known is his editorship, right up until his death, of this comprehensive and beautifully produced set of Darwin's entire literary output.
